Hi! I am planning to catch a student rush ticket for Sweeney Todd on the first week of Hugh Panaro's run. I've read on the musical's website that you should call the box office (??) to get your name on the list and THEN come in person. That doesn't sound like the usual dayseat/rush system, so I'm a bit confused. Did anyone try it?
Also I wonder which time you should appear to be one of the first people in line. Please, share your experience.
I did this back in May. The way it works is that, as soon as the box office opens, the list is open to names, but they won't sell any rush tickets until very close to curtain. That's why you're allowed to call to put your name on the list. You can also put your name on the list in person though, which is what I did. Since your name is on the list, you can leave and come back about 15 minutes to curtain.
The show often sells out, so the rush tickets are just whatever they have left right before curtain - sometimes there are a few leftover seats, other times they may give you a cancellation ticket, and sometimes there may be nothing at all. You must show a student ID when purchasing the ticket.
I did it on a weeknight, and I was the only person on the student rush/wait list. I got there right when the box office opened to put on name on the list, but seemingly nobody showed up after me. I think the show was sold out, but they gave me a cancellation ticket. When I asked, the box office person said the number of people on the waitlist ranges from as few as 0, to as many as 6. It's possible that the numbers have gone up in the few months since I saw it, so take that information with a grain of salt.
The student rush tickets are drawn from the pool of cancellation tickets (i.e - whatever they have left). So if you have a student ID, you pay $39. If someone without a student ID wanted a cancellation ticket, they might be able to get one, but it would be face value.

Thank you very much! That's everything I needed to know :) I guess that right after the cast change there could be some more people going after the rush tickets, but it's nice to hear I don't need to be there at 6am in the morning!
