I've seen this kind of thing many times before.  The actor isn't allowed to say anything so he talks trash about the show to his friend who then goes public about it to support his own personal agenda.

Just because you've seen it before doesn't mean it was the case this time. Wishing someone's career to end because of assumptions with no evidence is heartless. Luckily, you have no say in the matter as you're retired and no longer work in the business. Can't wait to see Oak's career grow and prosper and I hope you seethe about it as much as possible.

Always calls racists out.  ALWAYS.  This poster wants a Broadway actor, a man of color, to NEVER work again?   Broadway has so few black men on Broadway as it stands.  Especially in leading roles.  You want to ruin one's career over.....ticket sales?  Yeah.  You are a racist.  And you can still be racist even when you are, in fact, a POC.

as he tells it, the show was in dire financial straits after Ingrid Michaelson's scheduled departure and the producers asked Mandy to come in ASAP to save the show from closing. He acknowledges the racial optics but apologizes and insists it was not the intention at all.

Aaaand there it is, directly from Malloy himself. Advance sales obviously showed that Great Comet would've had to close after August 13 (Ingrid's departure date). They had to make a move, and fast.

This was purely financial, purely a smart economic decision in a commercial industry.

Anybody who tries to read more deeply into it beyond that is the definition of making a mountain out of a molehill.

It seems to me, as is usually the case on Broadway, the Producers saw more money in their future. I don't think it would have mattered if Oak was green, the Producers got an OK from a Tony Award winning actor, who has been on a highly successful TV show for several seasons, that spells more money at the BO, in most cases. African-American, Asian, Indian or green martian, the Producers saw a way of making more money-to keep the show open, a show which is already consistently on TDF and TKTS.

I don't get that this was a racist turn at all. Now why the Producers didn't get a "name" when Groban left in the first place is a wonder.

Wow, I applaud Dave for just laying out the truth like that.  I met him at the show and he seems like a great guy.  I feel bad for everyone involved, especially the entire cast/crew/orchestra and theater staff who may soon be out of job.

Last night, out of curiosity I looked at Telecharge for the week of performances beginning on Sept. 12th to see just how dire their advance could be. It really is that bad, the show is 40% sold if that.  Basically the mezz and rear mezz, plus most on stage seating is completely available for all performances.  Orchestra is about 1/2 sold if I'm generous.  

I honestly had no idea GC was in the same situation as GHD and Bandstand. Labor Day weekend could be quite the bloodbath.

As Dave said, that's the real issue here. Whether it's Oak or Mandy until Sept 3rd doesn't matter if that's what their advance is afterwards.  Mandy is just a bandaid.

Exactly, EthelMae. To borrow a term from Malloy, "racial optics" are—in my opinion, rightly—inconsequential in making such a decision if the alternative looks to be commercially viable or financially fruitful.

This is how the industry works. Plain and simple.
