Driving from the Midwest (Me and my two teen daughters) to an East Rutherford hotel on 7/31.  We should be there by 5:00 and would like to come into the city if we can find a decent show that night (that we all can agree on).  As we are doing 4 more shows the next three days (and staying in the city), the budget is stretched for the Monday show.  I see TDF sometimes has some Monday shows listed - Phantom (seen it), Saigon (sometimes listed), GHD (girls not wanting to see it) and Avenue Q (which we've never seen).  They are 15 and 17 and I'm ok with them seeing the content (not crazy about it, but ok).  Are there any other cheap show options for this night, as we won't have rush options and don't want to pay TKTS prices.  Anything?

Other options seem to be: 1984, Cats, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Chicago, Miss Saigon, School of Rock, and Wicked.

Thanks.  I did see those other shows listed on the playbill schedule, but most don't interest the crew and we've already seen a couple of them.  And was looking for a TDF monday show that l get for a cheap ticket ahead of time.

I would definitely suggest NOT seeing 1984.

A lot of people seem to enjoy Groundhog Day. I thought it was ok. Now Andy Karl is really great and so cute-so the teenage girls might actually like it.

I would ask the girls to reconsider Groundhog Day - as a teenage girl myself it is currently my favorite that I've ever seen (and I've seen many, including dear evan hansen). It's a lot more than the movie - it's hilarious, I laughed more than I did at TBOM, but also a beautiful story that anyone can connect to and enjoy. It's much more emotionally complex than most expect, and I found myself crying more than once and leaving having ~felt something~, not just laughing. Plus with 39.50 rush tix it's a great deal - if you wanna spring for better but more expensive seats, if you enter the lotto and lose they'll send a code for a discount - I got $70 front row seats this way. The lotto is also super easy to win too if you wanna try for it. Shows like Avenue Q are great but this beautiful show unfortunately looks like it might close soon, so it's really your only chance to see it, and I don't think it's one somebody should miss. But regardless enjoy yojr time in the city and whatever shows you do end up going with!!!

Groundhog Day is definitely the best choice for Monday night, and I really enjoyed it when I saw it. And now that I am listening to the OBCR, I may even go back and live the same show over again.

I cannot recommend Groundhog Day highly enough.

It is very easy to walk up to the box office for Miss Saigon and get $39 rush tickets for the show. I went last week in the late afternoon and got 14th row orchestra seat for the evening show.

I'll put in another enthusiastic vote for Groundhog Day.  Andy Karl is amazing, and the show as a whole is very underrated IMO.

That being said if your daughters really don't want to see it, you'll have a blast at Avenue Q.  (I don't know what the current off-Broadway production is like, but I love the source material).

Thanks for all the input and recommendations.  I don't know why the girls are against GHD. I have to admit the number they did on the Tonys didn't do much for any of us.  Still, I love the movie for its deeper meaning and life's lessons and can imagine that carrying over well to the stage. I'll have to play the OBCR and see if it grows on us.

I hope listening to the album will get them interested in GHD. If it doesn't, don't let that dissuade them, as the staging and performances really make the show whole. The OBCR and songs by themselves just don't do it justice.

Maybe show them this video.  It's of the song "If I Had My Time Again" and mixes footage from the show with footage from the recording of the album.  It might change their minds.  (Warning, it includes 2 lines of crude lyrics.)

Do you have to all go to the same show?

They're 15 and 17, not like 5 and 7 or anything, and you're seeing four shows together over the next three days, so I was gonna say send them to Avenue Q (or whatever they want to see), and you go see Groundhog Day, since that's what you want to see.

We have split up before and may later in the week for a show. Still always nice to share the experience with them when I can.  Splitting up could be an option. Thanks.

I wasn't that interested in seeing GHD but I went on a whim and I just loved it and I can't imagine why your girls would not enjoy it. It's funny clever and Andy Karl is fabulous. And I'm not a big fan of the movie. It's just s fun evening.

Groundhog Day!! The Tony performance (and even the cast album) are not indicative of the show itself. I would think most teenage girls would adore Andy Carl is the lead role

If I were driving in from the Midwest, and getting into my New Jersey hotel around 5 (and it could be later than that, if you hit traffic), the last thing I'd want to do would be to trek into Manhattan to see a show. I know I would be totally exhausted.

I would enjoy getting settled into my hotel and having a nice dinner! So I would recommend skipping the show, especially that there's nothing your group is burning to see, and look forward to the four shows you are seeing! Have a great trip!
