Why are Hello Dolly tickets so inexpensive??

Hi, I will be in NYC next week, looking for theater tickets. Hello Dolly tickets for next Wed/Thurs are as low as $120! Is Bette not in the show those days or something? I would have thought they'd be $300 at least!

She's definitely not out on those days, so those are decent prices if you don't mind sitting in the balcony. However, she is out on Sunday 7/30.

Um......define okay?  The balcony in that theater is really, really awful in my opinion.  But, it's up to you.

No, the Shubert Theatre may not be a large theatre but the balcony is the 3rd level up so you're looking down onto the stage like a bird's eye view.  It's high up.  That's why they are the cheapest/least expensive tickets.

J. C. I can't imagine paying $120 for that, but I'm not a huge Bette fan. If you really want to see the show, and that's the only ticket you can afford, go for it.

The Shubert balcony is really hit or miss depending on where you sit... Those damn railings and poles create some really annoying obstructions from a lot of the seats.

From re-reading the original post, the poster is an out-of-towner.  If his / her normal attendance is in a barn somewhere on the road, then the second balcony of the Shubert will seem like a great seat (minus the ones that are TRULY obstructed).  Most of the touring theatres are so large that you feel like you are in a different state from the stage if you are anywhere in a tier.  In Tampa, they even have a cute name (forgetting it) for the third balcony, because the seats are so far from the stage AND so high-up. (Of course, they aren't much cheaper than the first and second tier).

While I think it is obscene that anyone would have to pay $120 to sit in a second balcony theatre in any Broadway theatre -- demand pricing be damned, some greed-based prices are just wrong -- I would not hesitate to purchase the seat (unless it is truly behind a pole).  

I saw Dolly many times at the St. James, mostly in the second balcony, and you had to stand up frequently to see the stage.  Invariably, someone in the first row would lean over and the person in the second row would not complain (I tend to kick the chair if they don't respond to a reasonable request), instead also leaning over; and, by the time the show was 15 minutes old, most of the second balcony was up and down repeated times.  I really don't remember that ever being a problem in the Shubert, although I don't remember a Shubert theatre show ever having the ramp that surrounds the orchestra (can't remember the fancy French name).

Of course, for less than that, you could have a great seat in the mezzanine (Dolly is better from the mezzanine IMO, because dancing looks better when you have a little elevation) and see a great Broadway musical star named Donna Murphy in the process.  No contest to me.

I was thinking the same thing. Regardless of who's playing Dolly, the rest of the cast and the ensemble are so wonderful that any opportunity to see them from a better vantage point should be taken. Based on my personal experience, seeing this show from front row center mezzanine (for only $99, btw) is a very different experience than watching from the balcony.

I sat in the front row of the balcony tonight, and thought the view was absolutely fine. The show was perfect, quite possibly one of the best things, if not the best thing I have ever seen! Donna Murphy is sensational as is the rest of the cast. We are his Beanje been all these years? There is so much joy pouring out of that theater it's not fair.  I sent a text at intermission saying that we as an audience don't even deserve the second act to come, because the first act alone is worth every penny!

How is the front row of the mezz?   I can buy tickets for that very first row, but was concerned about a "bar" that might obstruct the view.   The last time I was in the mezz was for Matilda and I don't remember how that first row appeared.

Front row of mezzanine is amazing. You get to see the patterns of the dance numbers much better.

I always use 'a view from my seat' before buying any tickets. It was because of your pic I chose the exact same seat to see Donna in a few months! It seems like an incredible view. When I saw Bette i sat in the mid balcony and I had to lean forward to see when the actors moved to the front of the stage

I saw it a couple of weeks ago with Donna and sat in Center Orchestra 4th row back.    Great seats, not too close.

It's for my Mom's 70th birthday and she's a huge fan, have to find tickets one way or another. =)

I'm going to keep looking, hopefully something front balcony or mezz opens up for sub $200/ticket!

Thanks so much for the response! Yes, in Austin when I see shows the venues are massive. The few NYC shows I have seen seem much better from the nose bleeds, but I know all theaters are different.

Great feedback on here, holding out for a better seat now.

January 14, 2018 was the last performance date of the first block of tickets released when tickets went on sale.  Never once was it stated or implied that was Bette Midler's final performance in HELLO, DOLLY!  Rumor has it that she is leaving in late December or around that time.  No misrepresentation was done by the box office as it was never advertised as January 14th is Bette's final performance.  You are right now assuming and purchased tickets at your own risk as she could have either left the show by then or extended and MAY be performing on that date.
