Dyke March, Zionism, and Intersectionality

I readily admit that it's a challenge for a grizzled guy like me to keep up with liberal zeitgeist of the day.  Imagine my surprise when I learned of a march in Chicago this past Saturday called the Dyke March.  I had no idea that lesbians had re-appropriated a term that I thought was verboten.  However, the larger revelation was that some Jewish and non-Jewish lesbians are beefing over the thorny topic of the Israeli occupation of Palestine.  And I'm still fighting the urge to dismiss intersectionality as simply victimization on steroids despite my being a 50-something black guy with humble beginnings who grew up in the Old South that reminded me regularly that I did not receive its birthright.

Oh, the Chicago LGBTQIALMNOP community is a rather thorny bunch.  The trans community shut down the Pride parade.  But this is nothing new.  Shutting down Pride parades is the new Pride parade and shaming Pride is the new Pride.  The more letters we stuff under the umbrella, the more potential for dissension while a hierarchy among the groups naturally (even when not deliberately) emerges.  Thirty years ago it was the same even just between gay men and lesbians (and I still see this same problem in Chicago all the time).

In hopes of equality for all, their objectives spread across the political spectrum, calling for Palestinian liberation, supporting anti-colonial movements in Puerto Rico and the Standing Rock resistance against the Dakota Access Pipeline.

They joined with Black Lives Matter Chicago in demanding that the Chicago Police Department disband and prisons be shut down and for the end of charter schools in Chicago and better distributing of funding toward impoverished schools on the South and West Sides.

Intersectionality is a good concept. But like a lot of good concepts, it's being mangled by people to leverage more power.

And, unfortunately, the progressive left will eventually need to answer for the creep into anti-Semitism that the critique of Israel seems to lead. The left is very good at eating itself- everyone is a Lenin until they're a Trotsky.
