Is anyone with the CD able to type up the complete cast list? Or know where I can find a complete list on-line. I've searched and I can only find references to the characters played by the principals Nathan Lane, Bernadette Peters etc. but I'm curious to know who is singing the other roles. I know Lillias White, James Lipton and Phyllis Newman are all on the album but I'm not sure which characters they're playing. Thanks for any help.

You're in luck -- I wasn't sure where I'd put it, but a little searching turned it up! Sherry! Studio Cast? Since you have Lane and Peters already, I'll just give you the rest.

Carol Burnett: Lorraine
Tommy Tune: Beverly
Mike Myers: Banjo
Siobhan Fallon: Miss Preen
Tom Wopat: Bert
Lillias White: Sarah
Keith David: John
James Lipton: Dr. Bradley
Phyllis Newman: Mrs. Stanley
Laurence Rosenthal: Mr. Stanley
Marian Hampton: Cosette

Do you want the ensemble as well?

You're welcome! Yes, they do a great job. Although on the title song, I have to say -- as much as I like Lane and adore Burnett -- I give the edge to Jonathan Freeman and Christine Baranski on the old "Unsung Musicals" album. They REALLY tore into it, and it was such fun to listen to. Sherry! Studio Cast?

The cast is great. The material is spotty. Bernadette's ballads and Carol's comedy numbers are the highlights. Nathan Lane's Sheridan is fine when dueting with them but Sheridan's opening solo ("Why Does the Whole Damn World Adore Me"Sherry! Studio Cast? and his 11'oclock number ("Marry the Girl Myself"Sherry! Studio Cast? are pretty terrible. The ensemble numbers and the Tommy Tune tracks are merely bland.

The album contains a lot of dialogue lifted from the play but if you had to choose you'd be better off watching the DVD of Lane in the 2000 production at Roundabout.

"Although on the title song, I have to say -- as much as I like Lane and adore Burnett -- I give the edge to Jonathan Freeman and Christine Baranski on the old "Unsung Musicals" album."

I agree. I find the studio cast to all sound quite aged; they sound like they're tip-toeing around the score from fear that they'll hurt their brittle voices.

If you have the chance to listen to any unofficial recordings of the original cast (either Boston or Broadway), it's interesting to note that the version of the score on the studio cast recording differs significantly from the score as heard in the theatre. Song lists are different, lyrics change, orchestrations differ wildly - the studio recording doesn't really reflect the show as seen in 1967, but apparently represents a sort of idealized version from the minds of Lipton and Rosenthal.

I will say that I prefer Burnett's version of "Putty In Your Hands" to both Delores Gray's renditions in Boston and on Broadway (they're very different). Burnett makes more of a comic meal out of it than Gray seems to (as much as can be discerned form a bad tape recording).

A few quotes from a review by Marc Miller of the recording: "Nathan Lane's New Jersey accent and vaudeville exuberance keep sneaking through, working somewhat against Lipton's hyper-literate lyrics. Maybe this Whiteside is more self-made than previous incarnations, a Jersey City kid who reinvented himself to escape an unhappy childhood and live the high life; the interpretation works, sort of, but you wonder how it stacks up against the original cast ." "Burnett sounds vocally tired here, shifting registers uncomfortably and forcing out notes. Her comic timing is still faultless, and she and Lane have a fizzy burlesque rapport together, but the role is not prettily sung." "The deluxe presentation and drop-dead cast seem a little silly under the circumstances; you can take hamburger, dress it up with spices and fancy cheeses, flip it onto a silver platter and call it steak haché au gorgonzola, but it'll still be hamburger."
