Lizzie, you just beat me to it.

That's a weird way to put it. He's not blaming the doctor he's agreeing with the doctor.

And the name of the actor who will be going on is....?

A mention would be nice.

There are two understudies, and it's possible at the time Platt tweeted that that he didn't know (or it wasn't to be made public yet). Or he didn't want to post something even longer.

Why would it be that necessary to know right now anyway? People who have tickets will find out when they get there anyway.

I just thought that since BroadwayWorld reported on Mr. Platt's tweet in their Articles at the top of the Chat Board, they would have done a little investigating as to who will be going on and print his bio as well. This is quite a break for whoever is going on- I was led to believe that Mr. Platt hasn't missed a performance. In any event, the Understudy's name would be a nice addition to the story. They usually don't get their proper credit.

Totally understandable.  I am seeing it one week from today, so I trust he will be back in the show and better than ever!

Tonight will be Ben's fourth(?) time off. Last night and the other two nights he took off Colton Ryan went on.

Does the show give refunds?

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

qolbinau - From what I hear, yes, the box office has been giving refunds.

Does anyone know if there will be some sort of discount for tonight? I'm happy to see Ben's understudy. :)

In the past it has been Colton Ryan, so I would assume he is the first cover, and will be going on tonight.

Oh no. I just landed from Chicago and have tix for DEH on Sunday. He's the reason for the trip! I bought the tickets months and months ago.

I'm trying to be compassionate -- but I'll be very frustrated if he skips the matinee and does the Tony Awards show -- and that's exactly what's gonna happen.

I cannot.

And, while I'm back in NYC on business in a month, the tix at Stub Hub are double what I paid and significantly lousier seats.

It is frustrating, but actors are human, and they sometimes need rest.  Banking on an actor being in for the night you select is never a good idea because life is unpredictable.  I think it happens to everyone, so I know how bummed out one can feel.

Of course, I know all this. But hauling it in from the Midwest isn't coming in from Jersey. In addition, the hype around this particular performance and his appearances on TV? Of course you get excited.

But watch. He'll skip the weekend performances, but be there for the Tonys  and the Tuesday first-performance-after-the-Tony's And a pall of worry now fits atop the entire trip. Will he be there on Sunday? Time will tell.

im just...undone.

I will just add that seeing a Broadway show with an understudy in the lead is one of the more exciting theater experiences you can have. The show gets an energy and freshness that otherwise isn't there. It is also a unique experience - no one else will have seen quite the same show that you just saw. I highly recommend it.

I understand being disappointed, but worrying? Why?

Well, Ben isn't the only one with diagnosed anxiety. So, there's that.

Theres been a fair amount of anticipation (and money spent), so there's that.

My mother, who is 80, fell in love with him on TV, so the tix were a present for her, so there's that.

Ugh.

As for understudies, I  get it. I've seen some great ones (including Donna Murphy going on for Betty Buckley in Drood -- she was a sensation). But the myth and hype around Ben's performance is one of the reasons I booked the tix and the trip. It would be like going to see Mame and getting Lansbury's understudy.

happy birthday, Mom.

Sorry to be such an Eeyore, especially since we don't know that he won't be there at Sunday's matinee. But, but #%>!

I think what you want to hear, is usually what I want to hear when I'm stressed out, and that's just a simple, collective, agreeable: yes, it sucks.

To the other's points you do have options. You can talk to the box office about exchanges, you can try to make your trip a couple days longer if possible, you can simply stay and enjoy the unique experience of the understudy (who we have all heard is great!). Or, perhaps this is all for not and Ben will be there! Yes he has to listen to the doctors but it really, truly sounds like he'll be back as soon as he is physically able. Good luck!!

Skylark, I had a very similar situation happen to me last year. It was my very first Broadway show and I decided to go see The Color Purple because I heard Cynthia Erivo was fantastic and not to be missed. I get to the theater to see that her understudy, Bre Jackson, was on.

Within 10 minutes of the show, I didn't care. I was seeing a show on Broadway and Jackson was hitting it out of the ball park. Afterward, my friend mentioned to me that we got to see a rare performance of an understudy blowing a show out of the water.

If Ben is not on, still go and enjoy the show.

Last time he was in vocal rest I'm pretty sure he only took two days, one being their day off, so keep some faith and don't freak out.
