Orchestra for $99, Mezz/Balc for $79, and side balc for $39.  Not bad at all, I just may need to take advantage.

I think it is such a shame that the show is epic in demand for 7 performances and that the great Donna Murphy needs to be discounted so early in the run.  Makes me wonder what this implies for pist-Midler business.  Will we see a Producers scenario?  Although The Producers did run another 5 years, it was never the same and struggled for a long time.  I remembered thinking that it might have been better off if Nathan Lane had not originated the role.  It became so associated with thi.  Didn't help that the Producers major botched the subsequent casting.

HD is about Bette Midler in a way that it never was about Carol Channing, which is not an assessment of their performances at all.

This show will only continue to run after Midler's departure if they can secure a replacement of similar stature. End of story. They're already looking for one. If they can't find one, the show will close, having earned back its money plus a tidy profit.

I adore Donna, and bought tickets specifically to see her. But she's not well-known outside of the NYC theater community. It's not surprising that her dates aren't selling briskly, especially considering how much of this production has become an event built around Bette's name.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Agreed.  My plan is to see HD next week on the way to Cape Cod and DM in HD in October when I head back down.  I am expecting Bette to be terrific, but to appreciate DM more.  Only time will tell.

Friends --- I was an idiot and bought a ticket to the week before I could go. My ticket is for August 15th.  TodayTix won't do refunds, but they told me they will relist my ticket. So the next person to buy a ticket to that show will snap up mine and I'll get a credit back so I can buy a ticket to the correct show. If anyone's on the fence... this is me urging you to buy a ticket. For August 15th. Please. I'm begging.

I shouldn't be surprised, given how the show has been promoted as a Bette Midler vehicle (and people might as well wait a couple of weeks to see the real star), but I'm still a little surprised. The TodayTix rate is cheaper than regular prices for most touring productions. The producers obviously have calculated that no one really cares about seeing Hello, Dolly without Midler, no matter how many awards it's been nominated for, how much praise the overall production has received. and how many Tony awards Donna Murphy has won.

There's a short list of performers who could keep the show going after January, I suppose, but it sounds pretty doubtful.
