FOX doing RENT Live |
Whoever they cast, I just hope they put together something a little more true to the original than what I've seen of current shows being done. Just some of the still images make my heart weep for an Angel who is a poor yet fashionable drag baby and for the sweet smitten couple that Wilson and Jesse gave us. I don't know if they try for a more "edgy" Angel or what the goal is but if there isn't an innocence to Angel her singing about causing someone's dog to commit suicide just becomes monstrous.
With this coming from Fox, I can't imagine it won't somehow wind up being an indictment of the characters, their lifestyles, and some of the common plot points that detractors object to.

I'm getting worried about the "family-friendly" version they talk about... hope they won't ruin the show!!!
They need to cast Layton Williams as Angel! Saw him on the UK 20th anniversary tour, and he was beyond amazing!

NYPD Blue was on ABC
But Fox has still been subject to plenty of "attacks" over some of their content. True, it's been many years, but Married with Children certainly didn't sit well with a lot of the more conservative types, and a certain president spoke out very vocally about The Simpsons and their destructive influence.
That being said, I still don't have any expectation that this will be even a halfway decent product. I'd like to be proven wrong, but I'm not holding my breath.

You know, after I typed that I started second guessing myself. I should have done better research.

^ Oh my goodness Layton Williams is the Angel I saw in London a few months ago in the "Rent" production at the St James theatre (before it became The Other Palace, I think). He was MINDBLOWING. I would love for him to be in it.
Has anyone on here seen the petition to bring the current 20th Anniversary Tour cast to the Fox production? To be honest, there's only one or two performances I would be alright with to bring over.
Guys, c'mon. Rocky Horror wasn't live and was directed by Kenny Ortega - a guy mostly known as the director of High School Musical and sequels and a Hannah Montana concert/movie.
Grease: Live, on the other hand, was a completely different thing - and a very good one. Rent: Live is also being produced by the Jonathan Larson estate, after all. I doubt they would let Fox shred the book or make poor decisions.
