Bye Bye Birdie, most likely. I'd imagine Fox would want to keep their telecast as close to Christmas as possible, and NBC typically airs its presentation in the first week -
The Sound Of Music - December 5, 2013
Peter Pan - December 4, 2014
The Wiz - December 3, 2015
Hairspray - December 7, 2016

YES! This show is a little bit ridiculous at times, but so much fun and I think it perfectly captures the essence of the movie. Can't wait to see where they go with casting. It's also interesting that Fox picked this for their next live musical, considering how closely Grease Live! mirrored the popular film adaptation. The musical version of this show isn't really well known at this point, so I'm glad to see that even though A Christmas Story as a movie is over-saturated, they went with a lesser known musical with a little more room for interpretation. Excited to see how this pans out.

Haha, I was thinking about how it could prop them up for a nomination. But we can also choose to see it simply as any other job they took. They should win if they deserve it.

I absolutely fell in love with this show when I saw it on Broadway. I was never a big fan of the movie so I was a bit disappointed when my kids chose this show over MATILDA to see (we ended up seeing both because I really wanted to see MATILDA). I was not prepared for how much I liked ACS. I just remember having a huge smile on my face through the whole thing. And then there were those moments that I found emotionally moving which I was never able to find in the film. I especially liked something Erin Dilly did with the snowsuit in Act 2 that really made me tear up. I have ended up seeing this musical every year since seeing it in Boston and it never disappoints. I hope the TV version does it justice!
I think nasty_khakis is referring to the fact that the reports state that P&P are writing 'several' new songs for the broadcast, putting them in contention for an Emmy win for song, which they wouldn't be if they stuck to their original score.
I know it's probably a long shot, but it would be nice if, "Once Upon A December 2017", Caroline O'Connor (Countess Lily in Anastasia), could re-create her role as Miss Shields in the live FOX production of "A Christmas Story".
At least we still have her performance (along with those adorable gangsters) from the Tony Awards. I'm hoping that they actually do a bang-up job with ACS. At least, ACS is still "new" and hasn't been done to death.
In spite of not getting a lot of love, I'm still anxious to see "Anastasia".
Rachel Bloom would make me satisfied if O'Connor can't.

" Pasek and Paul have also written the entire musical score for an original movie musical from FOX Studio coming out on December 25, 2017 -- THE GREATEST SHOWMAN -- with Hugh Jackman/Michelle Williams/Zac Efron/Rebecca Ferguson/Zendaya and Broadway's Keala Settle and Will Swenson!
The movie is a musical biopic of P.T. Barnum ( Jackman)!
It could also be a chance for Pasek and Paul to repeat their recent Oscar success!
I'm not sure what the rights/contracts situation will be for re-airing but they usually sell DVDs, CDs, etc. and digital versions. Because of the holiday connection, ACS could go on to have a much longer life than the other recent live musicals.
FOX's next live musical event, A CHRISTMAS STORY, will air Sunday, Dec. 17 (7:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) LIVE on FOX. From Warner Horizon Unscripted Television, the three-hour live television event, inspired by the holiday classic feature "A Christmas Story" and the Tony Award-nominated Broadway production "A Christmas Story: The Musical," will be executive-produced by award-winning film, television and theater producer Marc Platt ("Grease: Live," "La La Land". The epic adaptation will be filmed at the historic Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank.
Emmy Award nominee Maya Rudolph ("Saturday Night Live," "Bridesmaids" will star as the mother of nine-year old "Ralphie Parker." Additional casting information to be announced soon.
Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, recent Tony Award winners for the musical "Dear Evan Hansen," and lyricists of "La La Land's" Academy Award-winning song, "City of Stars," also scored "A Christmas Story: The Musical," and will compose several new songs for the LIVE television event, with Jonathan Tolins and Robert Cary ("Grease: Live" adapting the book.
"A Christmas Story: The Musical" was nominated for three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score (Pasek and Paul) and Best Book of a Musical. The original Broadway production of "A Christmas Story: The Musical" opened Nov. 19, 2012. Based on the writings of Jean Shepherd, the book was written by Joseph Robinette, with music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
The musical was based on the motion picture "A Christmas Story," written by Jean Shepherd, Leigh Brown and Bob Clark, and the novel "In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash" by Jean Shepherd. The now-classic 1983 feature film, which became a sleeper hit, has since taken on a new life, along with growing critical acclaim, to become a perennial holiday favorite beloved by families and kids of all ages.
A CHRISTMAS STORY will be produced by Warner Horizon Unscripted & Alternative Television. Marc Platt and Adam Siegel will executive-produce, with Jonathan Tolins and Robert Cary ("Grease: Live," "Anything but Love," "Ira & Abby" serving as co-executive producers and writers. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will compose music and lyrics for the event.
Marc Platt is the Emmy Award-winning producer of FOX's "Grease: Live." He is also an Academy Award-nominated producer, most recently for director Damien Chazelle's "La La Land" and Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies." Platt has developed some of the most successful film, theater and television projects of the last 30 years. His film resume includes such titles as "Legally Blonde," "Into the Woods," "Drive," "Rachel Getting Married," "Scott Pilgrim" and "Wanted." He is also the producer of the Broadway mega-hit "Wicked," which has been seen by more than 50 million fans worldwide, and has racked up $4 billion globally. A former film executive, Platt served as president of production for three movie studios, where he oversaw box office and critical successes, including "Philadelphia," "Rudy," "As Good As It Gets," "Legends of the Fall" and "The Silence of the Lambs."
Maya is an interesting choice. Love her and she has the vocal chops. I wonder what the rest of the family will look like. If it will be mixed race or not.

Ooh what fun this is going to be! Fox has been on a roll lately with their live shows; Grease, Rent, and now A Christmas Story. I can't wait to see the additional casting.
