Hi all.  Sorry if this has already been posted.  I am kinda new here.  :)  My daughter and I are planning a trip from Kansas City to NYC to see "Dear Evan Hansen."  Here's the deal.  We need to know when to come.  We *really* want to see Ben Platt and Mike Faist and don't know when their contracts expire.  Of course, things could change with their Tony nominations, I know.  But does anyone know when their contracts expire?  We don't want to come all the way to NYC *not* to see them.  Thanks so much for helping me.  -Jennifer

Nobody knows for sure (other than those intimately involved with the production), but generally speaking, principal contracts are 12 months, beginning with the first rehearsal (typically 5-6 weeks before first preview).

I'd say if you can get to NYC by September, you have a good shot at seeing them. Like the poster below said, October and November might be dicier, but I doubt they'd leave until after the summer.

Thank you so much for the quick response.  If DEH premiered on November 14th of last year, that puts us at October 10th or so of this year to mark the 12-month mark.

Another question...are most cast contracts the same?  Meaning, are all of the cast members under a contract of the same duration typically?  And does winning or being nominated for a Tony give a performer the right to break the contract early?

Given there is no ensemble...I think it's safe to say that everyone in the cast so Ben, Mike, Rachel, Laura and everyone else will be in the show at least through the beginning of October. I think Ben could perhaps extend through the new year but I really can't seem him extending past that even with the assumption that he wins the tony.

One-year contracts begin from the date of the first preview, so, like haterobics mentions below, November 12 or 19 is the assumed end date. Also, another indicator of this is that the original block of tickets was on sale through November 19, 2017.

November 12 or 19 are the dates where their contracts are estimated to be ending, so go before then.

This is fairly standard. The most common exception if for REALLY big stars (Like Bette Midler).  Being nominated or winning a Tony is not a standard for breaking a contract.

That being said, many producers allow contracts to be broken or changed.  Sometimes people leave for a different project but return to fulfill the time of their contract....or just agree to end it early.  There is no guarantee to anything and we can only speak in generalities for the most part.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Everyone,

Thank you so, so much.  I really appreciate all of your help and your posts.

So...DEH is pretty much sold out through Thanksgiving.  Are there other reputable ticket sources?  Or, by any odd, strange coincidence, do you know a guy who knows a guy, perhaps, who might be able to help us get in?

Thanks again,

Jennifer

Telecharge has been regularly releasing seats within 3-5 days of each performance, both premium and regularly priced. If you can be somewhat flexible with when you see it, and are able to make a last-minute trip, I would recommend doing that. Right now, there are tickets available for this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday matinee, so they're definitely still doing it. I know that you're traveling from a distance, so I get that waiting until the week of the show is probably not an option for you. Other than Telecharge, I would suggest StubHub. They're a very reputable reseller.

I was speaking to some Broadway people recently and they were suggesting that Ben Platt would extend his contract until after Valentine's Day (February 17 to be exact). Has anyone else heard this? Would such an extension be unusual?

I'm not sure where you get this information from, but it is incorrect.  That's why they're called contracts.  Yes it does happen occasionally --- but certainly not allowed by "many producers".

The show would totally want him to stay. And extensions are definitely a thing. But it is a grueling role, so it may be an issue of whether he wants to sign up for additional months of living like a monk.
