Anyone have any good suggestions for the best food to eat in NYC? Preferably near the Hilton Times Square hotel. I would love to go to places the locals eat. Thanks!:))

Best means very different  things to different people. The "best food"? Le Bernardin. Might be the best seafood restaurant in the world. Jean-Georges ain't shabby either. If you're looking for cheap, local holes in the wall that have great food, these would not be them. There's a "Where are good places to eat in the theater district" thread almost every month. Do a quick search and those will give you many ideas.

I'll never go back to Le Bernardin. The food was bland and made me feel sick after I ate it. Plus it has a snooty and pretentious atmosphere.

There aren't really any great restaurants near Times Square. In fact, I'm still looking for a truly great New York restaurant, so I'd also welcome suggestions. I've been to 11 Madison Park as well and while there were things I really liked about it I wasn't blown away like I thought I would be.

Nowhere near Times Square, but we had a great meal at Supper on E. 2nd St. on the LES.  It's a neighborhood Italian place that was a block from our Airbnb apartment.  It's listed as a Bib Gourmand recommendation in the latest Michelin guide.  I can't believe I'm rhapsodic about a plate of spaghetti and pomodoro sauce with fresh mozzarella and a caesar salad, but they were great, and not ridiculously expensive.  We also ate at Babbo this trip, and Supper was way better.  Great wine list too.

I also have a soft spot for La Mangeoire on 2nd Ave. (between 53rd and 54th).  Another neighborhood place, decent country French food.

I always recommend Trattoria Trecolori, on W47th. Fantastic Italian food, very reasonable prices. Have gone there with several groups, and the feedback has been uniformly positive.

Nothing too expensive. Maybe $20 a plate or less? We're not too picky about food. We'll take any recommendations you have:)

I'm, then you're looking at good food, not great for NY prices

Cuban food: Havana Central on 46th

Brazilian: Impanema also on 46th

Mexican: Hells Kitchen on 9th at 51st the cheapest of the three - get the Brussels sprouts taco, delish

I second madbrian's Trattoria Trecolori. One of my favorite places to take folks. Have never had a bad meal there and it is reasonable.

To recap you're asking for the best food in NYC but you are "not too picky about food"... wtf?.... and you have a per dish cap of $20.

I'm glad I asked your price constraints. I have zero recommendations for you. Even Trattoria Trecolori will be out of your price range. I suggest you find Food Trucks and sample the city that way.

Snafu, you are aptly named.

I'm pretty sure it's not SNAFU who is asking for that.

Can you get a burger at 5 Napkin Burger for $20? I have eaten there a couple times and it wasn't that bad. Don't off hand remember what the bill was.

$20 a plate or less is not unreasonable. Trattoria Trecolori (which I also recommend) is an Italian restaurant. Italian restaurants have pasta. Pasta dishes are usually under $20. So, yeah, go for Trattoria Trecolori. It's not like three-star dining or anything, but for the Theater District, it's quite good.

I understand that $20 isn't much of anything in NYC. We are not the richest people in the world. We are just lucky enough to be able to go there. We're coming from Memphis so airfare is not cheap (not to mention hotel fees on top of that) so we really need to watch what we're spending. I've been waiting to come here my entire life so I'm not gonna not come if I can't pay for more than a bag of chips a meal. I don't want to say this to be rude. I just thought you outta know:)

There are plenty of places to eat for under $20 a head in the theatre district. They might not be the fanciest of places. There are a few pubs that serve staples like Chicken Pot Pie, salads and burgers and such. There is, as I mentioned before, 5 Napkin Burger. A step above your normal burger joint. If you wander around you will find some halfway decent places to fit your budget. You will not have to eat chips.

And nearly every restaurant posts their menu outside with prices.

For around $20 per person, I would try "The Perfect Pint" which is Irish Pub on W 45th. It has items like Shepherds Pie, Fish And Chips and pasta meals from $17-$20. Of course, that is not including beverages. I believe pints of beer are $8 but sure it is only a few dollars for soft drinks.

I'm not from NYC --I only visited once last year-- but I found a very reliable and reasonably priced place to eat around Midtown was Westway diner. I think I had a huge plate of fish and chips for $14 and I also ordered a soup and a drink and I'm almost sure I didn't pay over $20.

Just walk alomg 9th Avenie between 42nd Street and about 51st. You will find a lot to choose from. It is just a few minutes walk from Times Square. Most places post their menis outsidd or in the windows so you can check out the prices before you go in. If you have mever been you will want to have pizza! My favorite place is Famous Amadeus at 50th and 8th.

Just give the world Love.

Others will have to verify this for me but I believe you could go to Carmine's and order just one entree which would put you under $20 per person.  Everything there is family style so there would be plenty for two people. Only problem there is you have to make reservation way in advance.

I have not been to the Hard Rock Cafe in a few years but I believe you can get burgers, salads and a couple of other things for $20.
