9/11 Chapel to close do to High Rent? |
Thank God. One down, an infinite number of false, harmful beliefs, corruption, tax rip-offs and unethical standards to go.

Thank God you're Australia's problem, not ours.
The church owns many properties that it doesn't pay one cent of taxes on. If they are renting, they should be subject to the same rent increases that their secular neighbors are. There were many places that were privately owned during 9/11 who aided First Responders, supplying food, water and places to rest. They are not given special consideration.

And you're our problem.

4 words and all spelled correctly. Good job.

AS well as the 9/11 connection, this is one of the few downtown facilities and it is also used by other religions.
I believe a religious facility that provides support to the community should have a better tax relief option.
Yes, OK Sabrelady but we are talking rent here. Wouldn't it have better to purchase a property?
I also do not feel that ANY religious institution should be above paying taxes. Sure, it can be a different tax code but they should pay their fair share. The way it is now allows these Televangelists to pretty much print money, own mansions and a fleet of jets and pay not one dime!
Please don't think these TV frauds like Benny Hinn, Creflo Dollar and others are representative of organized religion any more than an ISIS suicide bomber is representative of the Muslim faith. If people have issues with The Catholic Church (and goodness knows they've provided enough reasons) so be it. But to condemn it unilaterally or worse to condemn all organized faith and religion as an entity.because of the Benny Hinns and the Joel Osteens of the world is silly. Should religious organizations that legitimately meet the criteria for non-profits set by the IRS have tax advantages? I believe they should. Should tax laws be tightened so televangelists like those I mentioned can't become millionaires on the backs of their supporters? Absolutely. A reasonably intelligent person just listening to them for 5 minutes should be able to figure out exactly who and what they are and refrain from supporting them financially in the first place. But considering who's in the White House, there are a lot fewer reasonably intelligent people than most of us would have assumed. And for the record, I'm not catholic. I just hate negative generalizations applied to a whole group of people because of the behaviors of a few on the fringe.
I didn't say there shouldn't be tax breaks. In order to have tax breaks you need to be taxed to start with. With the system the way is set up now, I can get an on-line ministry degree, set up weekly meetings and not have to pay any taxes. This is how theBenny Hinns and Creflo Dollars exist. I also know the Catholic Church happens to be one of the largest land owner in the country. I am on the Board of Directors of a Catholic run institution for the Developmentally Challenged. I am aware of the tax credits we are afforded for the work we do and I am not against it. However, there are very wealthy parishes out there that are sitting on expensive parcels of land.
This is a different argument then the OP started out with. My heart does not bleed for this Chapel to have to move because of rising rent. I have had to move my studio three times in three years because of the rent issue (due to gentrification). If they are renters they should be subject to the same rues.

SNAFU is spouting so much misinformation.... I don't even know where to begin. My head is spinning.
Good Liza your rectum needed a good cleaning.
I heard they were promised free rent, but their roommate ended up marrying the daughter of one of the developers there, and he's pressuring them to stop a protest or else be evicted...

This American agrees with him and wishes there were more rational thinkers among my neighbors. But I do take a less confrontational approach than qolbinau.
