After being enchanted by the She Loves Me taping from last year, I want to indulge in more filmed stage productions.

What do you recommend? Are there any to keep an eye out for in the future?

The current Miss Saigon is very well filmed. Others:

  • Sunday in the Park with George
  • Passion
  • Gypsy from the Savoy
  • Passing Strange
  • Pippin
  • Rent

There are also the adapted version of shows that were filmed on soundstages, but intended to replicate the stage experience:

  • Jesus Christ Superstar
  • Joseph... Dreamcoat
  • Oklahoma with Hugh Jackman

And if you feel like punishing yourself

  • Ten Commandments the Musical
  • Imagine This
  • A Tale of Two Cities in Concert

I know there was some mention of it, but did they film the current production of Sunset Boulevard when it was in London?

At this point, I feel like every filmed production is being listed. Are there any sub-par or below average recordings?

Unfortunately, I don't believe there's been any official indication that it was recorded. At any rate, there's been no indication that it will be released. Some of us are still hoping they'll film the current Broadway revival for release after it closes.

There's an old filmed version of Cats (not sure if it was made available for purchase, but it has aired on PBS) and it's pretty dreadful. And that's coming from an ALW fan here.

VICTOR/VICTORIA!

Yeah, yeah, I know everyone disliked the show, but I loved it. I thought it was hilarious. It was my very first Broadway show on my very first trip to NYC, so of course it is extra special. My buddy scored amazing orchestra seats. I was delighted to see Julie on stage, and I fell in love with Rachel York (and have had the good fortune to meet her on a couple occasions thanks to a former co-worker).

The video is very well done, it was produced for Japanese television as Julie notes in the introduction. The overture shows the red carpet on opening night, but I can only identify maybe half of the celebs. Perhaps the others are celebs that were better known to the Japanese audience?

Finally, the video has one of my absolute favorite elements: a full curtain call not obscured by credits. When I watch a video of a live show I like to have the full experience as if I was in the audience. Plus I'm a huge fan of curtain call music (and wish more recordings including them but that's for another thread). For V/V, they show the credits over the extended exit music.

Haven't watched this in a while. I have a lazy weekend planned...time to watch it again!

Does the Les Miz 10th Anniversary count? I know it's a concert but it's terrific...

SHE LOVES ME of course is up there for me.

MISS SAIGON in London is a recent one that I love, and SUNDAY IN THE PARK is amazing too.

It wasn't filmed. ALW/RUG have struggled to get the rights to make a movie version of Sunset Boulevard (the musical) for years and as a result this includes the concert version produced in London. Highly likely this also applies to the current Broadway production. I did read that they have made some headway recently, so a movie version of the musical (of the movie) could well be in the pipeline - hopefully within Glenn Close's time.

Echoing thoughts for Phantom's epic 25th at the Royal Albert Hall. Memphis is a good watch, as is Miss Saigon.

The fact that the Mint Fashions for Men revival was videotaped is a blessing that far too few people kow about.

I'll add that Love Never Dies is a very good filming from a technical standpoint (no comment on the actual content of the show itself).

I agree with all of these posts...and own a lot of the mentioned shows on DVD or Blu-ray. I wanted to throw KISS ME KATE in here, too. It captures the last Broadway revival when it transferred to the West End with Rachel York. Found out it's coming out on Blu-ray in May. The DVD is really good.

Broadway Theater Archive's PIRATES OF PENZANCE from the Delacorte.  Also its MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, which was broadcast on CBS while it was still running at the Winter Garden, and THE ROYAL FAMILY, with Eva Le Gallienne, Rosemary Harris, etc., which played the 46th Street Helen Hayes Theatre.  The Old Globe's recent TWELFTH NIGHT.  And then there's the Japanese television broadcast of THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES, which recently turned up on youtube:

The problem, it seemed, was the reluctance of Paramount to give its approval. But there's a new studio chief at Paramount now -- former FOX CEO Jim Gianopulos.  Maybe there is a chance now to revisit the plans for the musicalized remake of their classic film noir property by Billy Wilder?
