I'm undecided about auditioning for my school musical. I am not much of a dancer and I'm a trying singer at best. However I love to act and think this could be a whole lot of fun. We are doing Sunset Boulevard which happens to be one of my favorites. I would like to audition for either Joe or Max. If not I would be ecstatic to play whoever the guy is that sings "the lady's paying". Does anyone have any tips for a first timer going for a major role?

Be loud, be clear, be bold (confidence).  Don't be afraid to try something different then everyone else -- it will help you stand out.

When picking your song, pick one that shows YOU off.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
