My daughter and I flew to NYC last week and decided to try our luck in the cancellation line. We arrived on Tuesday, 2/28 and decided to go by the theater to see how many people were in line. When we got there at 5:30 pm, there were only about 12 people waiting so we decided to wait since the show was at 7pm. I think the first person in line had queued up around 10 a.m. I believe about 4 people were issued tickets while we waited. There were also couple of people who showed up with extra tickets that they were willing to sell for face value. I would be wary of these people, but someone in front of me paid cash for a ticket and walked into the theater with the person who was selling it.
We decided to try our luck the next day, Wednesday. When we got to the theater after 3pm, there was no one in line. I asked at the box office, and they told me that 3 people were there earlier and had already been issued tickets, so we would be first in line. We didn't even have time to get comfortable on the sidewalk outside the theater before we were called in and offered 2ND ROW SEATS, front and center!! We paid $199 each for the tickets (face value). I imagine that this time of year there are not too many tourists in the city, but I would suggest that if you can, try the cancellation line mid-week as we did. Be flexible, optimistic and persistent. Also should note that there was not a public matinee performance that day. The 2pm show was reserved for school groups.
