Deborah Cox to Release "The Bodyguard" EP! |
So, I get to listen to her mimic Whitney Houston, in a show that in all likelihood won't make it to Broadway?
That's a hard pass for me. At least Headley gave the songs her own spin.
Completely unnecessary. Does she even have that loyal of a following? As I've said before, every time I've seen her in a show (when she hasn't called out) her voice was flat or sharp and she missed the money notes. I'm seeing the Canadian production just to avoid her.
She definitely has a loyal LGBTQ following. She has been an activist for years. I saw the show recently and thought it showcased her talents beautifully. It's a fun show, but don't go in expecting brilliance, it's a Whitney jukebox musical. She also released a version of her "Easy as Life" from Aida years ago. I do wish they'd do a North American Cast recording, I find the world premiere recording with Alexandra Burke very boring in comparison to now having seen Cox. If you like Whitney, you'll like this, if not, avoid it altogether. Shame we didn't get a recording of Headley in it from London.
The Bodyguard just came through Philly last week and when Deborah set her schedule that she wouldn't be doing the 2pm Saturday matinee and Sunday 6:30pm, my office had a lot of patrons calling to exchange. Also, we got a call from someone upset who bought the CD at the performance only to find it wasn't Deborah on it. For what it's worth, Cox and her voice were in killer shape during the run of the show here and I would very much listen to her sing some of those songs on recording.
I agree with Philly - the show is fun, but doesn't reinvent the wheel by any means. Cox, Jasmin Richardson (who plays her sister Nicki and is her understudy) and their voices are the real highlights. The show is cheesy and fun, but nothing to phone home about.

*eye roll commences*
I saw the show during the Philly engagement. It's absolutely terrible, and it would be more successful if they just threw out any pretense of putting on a musical and just did a Whitney Houston tribute concert. That's what the audience wants anyway--I attended on press night, and the audience didn't give a crap about anything happening on stage that wasn't a production number. Not that the show gives them much to care about. Cox's singing is sensational, but she's not an actress at all. Her work in the book scenes was pretty pathetic. Jasmin Richardson is indeed a find as Nikki and I bet she kills it when she goes on as Rachel. I'd like to see her talents represented in a better show.
It's a shame that people aren't smart enough to look at the fine print when they're buying tickets, because Cox has been sitting out Saturday matinees and Sunday evenings over the course of the entire tour. Her absences during the Philly engagement were announced weeks in advance. It's a shame that a lot of people cancelled their tickets, because Richardson is probably giving a better overall performance.
I saw it in Chicago 2 weeks ago, and thought it was dreadful. Deborah Cox was not on, (it was a Wednesday matinee), and alternate was okay. I guess I am not a fan of Whitney Houston songs, and also thought it was cheesy. Full disclosure, I don't know anything about Deborah Cox. But anyway, I kept looking at my phone for the time. (discreetly, of course).
I'll be surprised if it makes it to Broadway.
