So, in your opinion, has anything ever happened at the Tony Awards that matches or comes close to what happened at the Oscars on Sunday? I mean, naming the wrong musical as the winner at the end of the night is a bit extreme, but is there anything you can think of?

In 2004 didn't they place a picture of wicked thinking they had won best musical? I remember reading about it, but it's probably exaggerated.

That time David Hyde Pierce won Raul Esparza's Tony.

Didn't last year, they showed Christopher Fitzgerald instead of Michael Arden when doing the  award for  Best Direction of a Musical?

^Yes, that happened. It was sad.

The year before, they gave Best Actress Tonys to Kelly instead of Kristin (I'm 100% sure that was a mistake which they were too embarrassed to fix).

When Elaine Stritch's acceptance speech was cut short in 2002.  The orchestra slowly kept getting louder then the cameras just cut away while Stritch was still in mid-sentence.

In 1991, Anthony Quinn was to announce the winner of best director of a musical. Instead, he read the the best play winner, Lost in Yonkers. Someone had written the best play winner on the back of the card with the name of the best director winner.

From a clip I saw from the 1997 Tony's when Lilias White won Featured Actress in a Musical they showed a clip of Debra Monk in Steel Pier rather than Lilias in The Life (obviously this is nowhere near the scale of what happened at the Oscars)

Of course people couldn't help but make petty remarks about who should have won over whom. Jesus. I know you're being facetious but it's just derailing the original topic and rehashing petty arguments. Valentina, again, I know you're probably just exaggerating for effect, but I sincerely hope you're not deluded enough to actually think that was what happened.

Not exactly the same, but let's not forget the Bret Michaels incident in 2009

When Katie Finneran won for Promises, Promises in 2010, they accidentally showed Karine Plantadit as the winner for Come Fly Away...

When Fran Drescher presented Featured Actor in a Musical in 2014, she accidentally skipped over Joshua Henry's name.

These are ancient, and trifling, but still amusing, if you see them on YouTube. When Melba Moore won her Supporting Tony for Purlie, Jack Cassidy called her Melissa Moore. He instantly corrected it. And more amusingly, when Ingrid Bergman presented the best Score Tony in 1973, she mispronounced Sondheim's name-twice! She was probably the only one in the theater who was unfamiliar with Mr. S.

A descending set piece hit him in the head and broke his nose as he exited after performing in the opening number. There's a video linked above.

They cut the number from It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues one year because they were short on time. They were the last performance of the evening, and the show was running long so the number got axed. It became a story the next day when the producers (rightly) complained.

2013: The lead producer for Best Revival of a Play winner WAOVWolfe gave her acceptance speech from a side microphone, not the main one at center stage -- where Sigourney Weaver and Michael Bloomberg were standing to present the award. It took several moments for the booth to switch on the mic so most of her speech went unheard, at least on TV. Not a SNAFU perhaps, more just "Awwwkward" as Weaver and Bloomberg stood there looking.

Another thing, here on the West Coast they air as a taped delay. I'm trying to remember specifics but I know there have been a few instances of flubs, seen live and posted about here and the other board, that were fixed for the delayed airing.

That wasn't a snafu.  If they hadn't cut away, who knows how long it would have gone on. She was rambling aimlessly sucking up time.  She even started to just point out people standing behind her as she saw them to thank, "And...um...YOU!  Blah blah blah (turns around and searches the faces) ...um...OH! and YOU!...blah blah blah..."  I know she wanted her moment, and she got it...and then demanded more.
