As noted above, there was no physical "Chokey" device in the Broadway production, but there was a rather elaborate display of green lasers that were projected all around the theatre to suggest a sort of "virtual" cage (as least that's what I got out of it). It was a surprisingly non-literal concept for a show that was otherwise presented with mostly physical sets and props.

That did remain in the tour. Seems like Broadway show remained intact for the most part.
I always assumed that the laser/light show at the end of MATILDA was a nod to Andrew Roy Fletcher's classic musical "Zoo Animals on Wheels".
"What's the one thing all zoo animals love when they're sad?"
"A light show, with DISCO music!"
