Performances begin tonight and I'd love to hear your thoughts.  It seems to be an amazing cast.

Going on Tuesday night. Couldn't pass up seeing James Earl Jones, and it's my first time seeing an ART production in Cambridge - looking forward to it!

Got my ticket for March 11!

Protip: if you're a student with a valid ID, you can order "best available" seats for $25 plus $5 facility fee over the phone. They always check ID and validity at the BO upon pickup. The people at the BO there go out of their way to get you the best seats they can. :)

Very curious to hear about this new production, which sounds as though it might be aimed at Broadway with its starry cast. Starts previews tonight at ART in Boston, anyone going to be there?

Saw the first preview tonight. Disappointing overall.

Lovely set. Fine performances from Amanda Plummer and Bill Heck, though he could use a dialect coach.

Dana Delany is out of her depth as Maxine. I'm taking a group of students to see it in March. I hope, by then, she will have found herself.

I saw the first and second previews, and Delany improved a lot overnight. For that matter, I thought Ashley did, too -- she tempered her character's loud pushiness with more disappointment and vulnerability about setting up what's turning out to be a pretty crappy tour for her group.

I can easily imagine this production being excellently performed almost across the board by opening night (with the possible exception of the Nazi tourists -- I'd say that those roles don't really give the actors much to work with in the first place, and the director appears to be aiming at caricature, making matters even worse).

Being a huge Williams fan, I am giving a lot of thought of checking this production out -- also, everything that i've seen at ART has ended up on Broadway - and beyond (hello tour of Finding Neverland...)

Looking forward o reading more reviews of the show

I saw the play last night.  Really didn't know too much about it going in - thought it was good, but not excellent (granted, it was the third performance of the run).  I second the comment about Amanda Plummer and Bill Heck's performances, particularly Heck.  The set looks great, and there's one particular effect which was fantastic!

I was a bit perplexed by the character of Maxine - I'm not sure if it's an issue with Dana Delany herself, but perhaps someone more familiar with the play can set me straight.  The costume as well as the way she acted (again, not sure if this was Delany's choice or the director's) just felt out of place for 1940.

It was great to see James Earl Jones on stage, even though the role is relatively minor in terms of stage time.  He was wearing what appeared to be an earpiece, but if that is indeed what it was, it didn't have an impact on his performance whatsoever - no awkward pauses or dropped lines.

I know there's a strong trend of ART productions transferring to Broadway lately, but I'm not so sure about this one.  The cast is solid and by the end of the run it will surely be improved, but I feel like it might have a hard time finding a venue or audience in a pretty crowded season.  I suppose it could fit somewhere like the Belasco or Friedman (if that's even possible given their relationship with MTC).  Frankly, I would prefer to see the Huntington Theatre production of A Confederacy of Dunces on Broadway (especially if Nick Offerman reprised his role), but I think that ship has sailed given it's been more than a year since it closed.

I wouldn't be surprised if the rather lukewarm reviews put the kibosh on talk of transferring it.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body
