Since the threads already posted about this revival are brimming over with excitement (see 1 and 2), I thought it'd make sense to start a fresh thread specifically dedicated to the production in performances! Here we go...

Previews for the second Broadway revival of Sondheim and Lapine's masterpiece, Sunday in the Park with George, begin TOMORROW NIGHT (Saturday, February 11, 2017) at the newly reopened Hudson Theatre with Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford at the helm. The production's preview period is rather short, with the show set to officially open on February 23 for a limited run through April 23.

Who's going?!

PSA that Crazy NooNooHead is a lovely person, and a true Sondheim fan- she was in attendance at my 54 Below show this week. Thanks again, girl!

Someone on Instagram posted an insert from the Playbill of something happening after the show.  Since Mr. Sondheim is in attendance, could it be a Q&A?  Pretty special experience, if that's actually the case.

Wow. I don't know what to say. It's absolutely beautiful. It's much more than a staged concert. Costumes are fully upgraded and act one is made up of beautiful projections on the curtain hanging in front of the orchestra.

The cast is marvelous. There are no words. The new additions are perfectly cast. Ashley Park steals her scenes. Erin Davie is wonderful.

It's just so beautiful.

I also have a perfect view of Sondheim and Lapine taking notes. As always when I see Sondheim in person, I start crying.

What an experience so far. That was only the first act

I still don't even know what to say. I can't form proper thoughts. It was magical. That's what people are calling it on their way out of the theater.

The chromolume is indeed newly scored and the presentation of it is unexpected and so impressive. I don't think the spectacle of it should be spoiled.

Does anyone know what the view is like from the back of the balcony? Can you see the whole stage and not miss any of the action? I want to get tickets but I don't know if I should spring for Mezz seats or if the back of balcony is just as good. Thanks!

I also wanted to say what a thrill it is to have Michael Starobin's original orchestrations (now with two extra players) back on Broadway, especially after the last revival's embarrassing lack of musicians. In my opinion, they are some of the greatest post golden age orchestrations. Absolutely brilliant.

Great to hear from you so far, ljay!

Would you mind speaking to the production's costume work a bit more? I became curious after seeing Claybourne Elder's Instagram post that shows Gyllenhaal stepping out for his entrance. For example, does anything special happen to Dot's dress during the opening number?

You won't regret it, Warhol.

the costumes are lovely and competely upgraded from the evening wear of the concert. I would've liked better distinction between the two Georges, but that's a minor quibble. Dot pops her jacket open in the opening number, she removes it and she's wearing a corset. Nothing fancy like the original. But Annaleigh really sells that entire section.

Search the show on instagram and you'll see the costumes.

I was in the first row of the balcony, center, and the view was perfect.  Closer that I expected, and the light show was amazing from that angle. It was hot up there (ha!)-- I felt like I wanted to die it was so hot. The water fountains do not work, and they ran out of bottled water quickly-- prepare for that.

The show itself was wonderful. I loved Ashford's modern take on Dot, and that she was willing to slip out of the Bernadette Peters mold (that was amazing, but you can't replicate that). Her gestures and facial expressions made the role interesting in a new way. Gyllenhaal is not the singer that Patinkin was (duh!), but he was quite good nevertheless. I especially enjoyed him when he transformed into the dog for a whatever song that was. (What song is that?) The audience loved him.

People were scrounging up Playbills like mad after the show-- a lot of people didn't get the ones with the stickers on the cover but somehow I got two.
