I love watching The Tony Awards just to celebrate theater in general and, in a good year, to see glimpses of a lot of the experiences I already had or, in a bad year, to see all of the stuff I need to get to NYC and see. But who actually wins? Eh, not that bothered. I enjoy when artists or shows I know/enjoy win, but beyond that, it doesn't really change my opinion on anything. On the business side, I do appreciate when a Fun Home wins, since that will mean more people will see it and it will actually stay open...

I am mixed.  I love to see the fashions and the outfits. In my opinion alot of awards are more given on popularity and politics than merit. Plus I find it very narcissistic in a look how wonderful we are way.

The Emmys and Oscars bore me to tears, especially the Oscar's . I enjoy the Tonys and the Grammys because of the live entertainment.  I will not watch any of them this year because I don't want to hear Trump bashing with almost every acceptance speech. I can find Trump bashing (lol) at many other forms of media and don't need to hear it at an awards show.

You also seem to enjoy adding apostrophes to words for no reason.

You need more of a life IMO if you felt the need to post that remark.  This is a chat board and I don't worry about everything I post being perfect.  I guess I should be more careful since it seems someone like you needs to make an issue out of it. Notice to everyone, "Mister Matt" will be grading your posts - lol

What do you think about theatre awards in general?

Welcome to BWW and the world of chat boards!  I'm so honored I could provide your first experience with the mention of grammar or the use of apostrophes.  As you can tell by the adorable little gif above, the subject itself is hardly new and discussion of it is not only all over the world wide interwebs, but has occurred numerous times on these very boards on BWW!  You can use the "Search" feature for more examples or even try the use of "Google" for hundreds and thousands of topics and discussions from people all over the world!

Luckily, I don't live life by your needs or requirements and it's not like you're the shining role model of chat board etiquette or anything.  I would've given you a C for your use of grammar, but your attitude and ambivalence lowered it to a D.  Perhaps it's time for a review!

To be honest, I think posts aimed at correcting grammar and spelling are a bit of a nuisance. They disrupt the flow of discussion far more than the mistakes (or, more precisely, instances of nonstandard usage) that they're intended to address.

Mister Matt, I don't mean this as a personal attack, I swear! It would appear that we simply have incompatible pet peeves. :)

Well, everyone has different pet peeves and what they do or do not consider a nuisance.  One of the things that bothers me is ambivalence towards the written word while simultaneously communicating in a forum requiring the use of the written word as communication.  To me, it's just as disruptive to navigate the mistakes and more of a nuisance to normalize them as "nonstandard usage".  And as I was pointing out, my pet peeve for grammar usage isn't uncommon in the least.

And bitching about the futility of someone addressing it?  Using four times as many lines to explain how I need a life for posting a remark is just hilariously hypocritical.  But I do agree that you have every right to bitch about me as I do to bitch about grammar.  And honestly kdogg, your post just now did nothing more to contribute to the flow of discussion on theatre awards, did it?  Of course, the topic was started by a sock puppet who only exists to start threads with inane questions, so does it really even matter?  What do you think about theatre awards in general?  I don't take it as a personal attack.  It's just a discussion and this is just a message board.

I'm with Matt 100%. I believe these mistakes in grammar and spelling are usually not typos, but a lack of knowledge. It bothers me because these are things taught in elementary school. Having been a teacher, well, "you can take the girl out of teaching, but you can't take the teaching out of the girl."

Also, those people who love to command "get a life" don't seem to realize we have lives. Active and full ones. It's possible to have a life and also post here. You people are doing it, aren't you?

Some people will absolutely not care about grammatical errors, but some will.  For the latter, they may immediately diminish or ignore your point(s).  Right or wrong, if you want your message to have as much impact as possible, pest to write it properly.

That's an excellent point, and I was indeed aware of the subtle hypocrisy as I was typing. But it seemed like this thread had already drifted far enough to give me some cover. :)

I'm a Ph.D. candidate in linguistics, and we're the worst in this respect. What others see as mistakes we see as interesting data points. I realize we're the eccentric ones in this regard.

It's a whole new discussion.

It helps to acknowledge, perhaps, that just as an employer will judge you by the way you dress and groom yourself for an interview or work, a reader will judge you by the quality of your writing as well as the content. So there's never a good reason not to proof your work (of course, we all have typos; the beauty of BWW is the ability to correct them).

I totally understand, kdogg.  I'm a paralegal, so grammar and punctuation are critical to the profession.  But I won't pretend I wasn't always this way.

Sorry but the nuns I had as teachers in elementary school already taught me many years ago about grammar. I have a feeling they would forgive me for my "grave" error - lol. I have a college degree and I have been an IT professional for many years. Trust me, my resume and emails sent at work are reviewed for errors. You are right, my attitude about it is probably a "D". I post here for entertainment so I really don't check it very carefully. Plus, I now know that you will be checking so I really don't have to worry about it - lol  Actually, I think I am a role model of chat board etiquette. I always treat people with respect here and I have seen a lot worse said to people than "get a life"  If that bothered you than I will apologize.

Didn't you do the derailing before the grammar lesson, though? You are also the first commenter to not talk about the topic... heh.

Wow, don't dare correct certain peoples' grammar, they explode with anger. oy.

Anyway, as for theater awards:  Any awards in art mean only one thing - that particular group of judges  went for one piece of art over another. It's like asking "What's the best painting of the Expressionist Era?"

Silly

Judging another's intelligence or the validity of his/her contributions to this board by his/her command of grammatical rules perpetuates the idea that theatre belongs to the elite. I would gladly sift through grammatical errors to be exposed to the ideas of individuals with educational backgrounds and experiences unlike my own. Wanting to only hear from a homogenized group of people is a disservice to the discussion that could be occurring here.
