So, I kind of want to take an adult vacation and travel by myself. I've never done it, but always wanted to go to Toronto. I just read "Station Eleven" and they talk a lot about the Elgin Theater in Toronto, and got me thinking about taking a trip to see The Bodyguard and Sousatzka, and see whatever else is playing. Anyone taken a trip and can speak to some cheap hotel options or flight/train options? Trying to keep the whole trip to under $500 if possible. Maybe just go up for 2 days - double show Wednesday and then a day to just walk around and explore.

So, $500 US  is approx 650 Can. Even still it would be tight.  There are no cheap airfares. Porter( on sale) will run u 250- 300 (can)  a hotel room about 150 Can.  Train is almost as expensive ( about $ 240 US) as the plane PLUS it's 12+hrs. (IF I had my druthers I'd Porter- they have their own departure section i Newark that give free refreshments   and the TO one is even nicer! plus the island airport is right downtown)

( nice train tho)

The bus (Greyhound/Megabus)  is about the same time as the train but  about 1/2 the cost. ( It IS a bus tho))

There are lots of hotel search web sites  just plug your dates in. 5 yrs ago i needed to stay a sat night close to where i work( had to stay someplace close so I cld get to work Sun am by 0730)  Got  the HoJo  in the Yorkville  for about $100+ tax inc brkfast bar.  Clean, upscale nab( Whole Foods just down the block) close to lots of attractions. A little worn ( hopefully reno'ed by now) but clean and  fine for what I needed.  but there are probably others, Delta Hotels and the Mariott by Yonge &College can have good rates. Like I said, just plug in what u want.  Buy a TTC day pass to get around $12.50 . Elgin theatre tours are on Thurs tho so not sure how that would play w your schedule. ( also about 12.50)

Anyhoo take a look and see what works. There is lots to do in TO, Great Aquarium, Art Gallery  w largest collection of Henry Moores)  good resto's some even cheap(ish)

Come & play!

Is there a certain "theater district" part of town? Might Air BnB but don't know neighborhoods.

I've only been to Toronto once.  It's a trip I try to keep out of my mind since United lost my luggage going to and coming back.  I was there for pride and the only theater I attended was Lord of the Rings the musical.  I don't think there is a theater district there.  I don't recall any other theater near that one. I think they are spread out. Either way (since we've pmed in the past) wouldn't you rather stay near the gay neighborhood.  They have a huge cluster of bars, clubs and baths in one area.  I stayed at a B &B when I was there right in the area.  I don't remember the name, but they were quite reasonable.  That would be where i would search for overnight stay.

Well if your want Boy's Town. That would be  Wellesley and Jarvis area.  Fair number of bars ie  Sailor's and Woody's side by side and w connecting doors. Crew's.  Not so many good restos.  Air BNB is prob cheaper than a  hotel.

There isn't a formal theatre  district, |the Royal Alexandra & Princess of Wales are about a block apart w Roy Thompson Hall ( concerts+ forming a triangle on King St W.

On Front St. we Have St Lawrence Centre for Performing Arts  and what is now Sony Centre for Performing Arts. ( a barn of a theatre) lots of tours but often stuff like Ukrainian Military Chorus ( I guess there is a market|)  Young Peoples Theatre is a bit further over, and further still is Berkeley St Theatre.

There is the Soulpepper complex ( our in city repertory  company) in the Distillery District. ( Gooderham & Worts) EXcellent company

I haven't even mentioned Buddies in Bad Times on Wellesely  a Queer theatre/bar/club  or other long standing alt theatre like Passe Muraille off Bathurst St ( not too far from the King st venues)

and my personal fav ( cause it's close to me) Tarragon Theatre   on Bridgeman near Dupont.

Plus  The North York Civic Centre  with 3 large venues  waaay up in Northern TO ( Fosse was developed there)

The Elgin/Winter Garden complex is on Yonge Between the Mirvish theatre near Yonge & Dundas

And The Sony Centre on Front.

So while there is a lot of space bitwixt and between most do fall below Bloor st to Front and the big King st Venues.
