Awful, they have 1 guy in custody already. Apparently they aren't sure if there is a 2nd shooter or not.

I had no idea you could check guns onto an airplane. I've heard at least three lawmakers on the news today go on about how hunters check their guns And "no one could possibly to anticipate something like this". Really?? In what world has a person been living in if they couldn't anticipate something like this?

I know we have the 2nd amendment. I don't think there is any chance that in my lifetime the 2nd amendment will go away. But I can't bring shampoo onto an airplane but people can check their guns?

Lawful gun owners can find another way to get their guns to their destination. Regulating my ability to take liquids on a plane doesn't restrict my right to own them. Banning guns from checked baggage wouldn't take away anyone's right to own a gun either

I have said this before: ALL of left-of-center America must unite to insist that Congress rewrite the Second Amendment for the 21st century. No other gun-control laws will do.

Right-of-center America believes the Second Amendment is as immutable as the First Amendment. The only way to effect change on this issue is to simultaneously repeal and revise the Second Amendment, even if it means that we must fight a Second Civil War to do so.

And the gun was the ONLY thing he checked.

I agree PJ. I just don't see that being in the realm of possibility anytime in the near future. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't be advocating for it.

And while that might be the only thing that would truly fix the problem, I think passing sensible regulation in the meantime can save lives. And making airports gun free zones seems like sensible gun regulation to me.

It drives me crazy the NRA has such power over legislation when the majority of their own members don't agree with them. Just another symptom of our broken political system.

Just as a small point of information, you can travel with shampoo in your checked baggage.

Yes but that's not really the point.

If you have a gun in your checked baggage do you have to show a gun permit?

When you think about it people can carry guns about anywhere as long as they have a permit. There are probably gun carrying people all around us but we don't give it much thought. There are probably gun carrying folks on the subway for all we know.

It is my understanding that concelaed carry is against the law in NYC unless you have a special permit. New York State permits are not valid in NYC.

it is actually amazing that something like this has never happened before or maybe it has. I think guns should be prohibited in claimed baggage all together but that would probably never fly.

I've lost touch with family over this issue.  My wife and I took off from there about 2 hours before it happened. From what I'm hearing just getting back, the place went into a panic as did the police, totally overreacting to what happened.  Kdogg is right, that guy could have just as easily walked in off the street, this will change nothing.  We are sick and demented people on the whole.

Has anyone ever challenged the constitutionally of NYC's limited ban, at either the federal or state level?  Don't mean to conflate the two issues, but NC's bathroom law debacle came about partly due to a Charlotte ordinance conflicting with state law.  I ask in all sincerity as a non-attorney.

Bigots, business owners, corporate board members, lobbyists, and trust fund babies are voters too!
