According to Gavin Lee's IG, they recently had a listening party for the cast album of THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL. Has a date been announced yet? Dying for the music
I'm just wondering how much they can edit the show if it's already recorded, mixed, and mastered. If I recall correctly, they recorded it pretty soon after the Chicago production, which was badly in need of edits, closed.
I saw the first preview in Chicago and thought that while it was funny and cute, certainly needed work. Unfortunately I only saw it then, so I don't know what they cut (hopefully the rap song- didn't work), but overall the music wasn't really the problem with it, and I hope they release the album.
Hairspray and A Christmas Story recorded and had their albums released before changes were made. It's happened before and isn't uncommon. Just because a show is recorded, doesn't mean the authors can't continue to work on the material.

I know in the last weekend of performances they did a major overhaul, so I'm geussong they made all the adjustments they needed before recording.
In our millions, in our billions, we are most powerful when we stand together. TW4C unwaveringly joins the worldwide masses, for we know our liberation is inseparably bound.

I doubt a lot of those changes were lyrical or at all to do with the content of individual songs. (Given the model of single songs by major talents.) The major work to do when I saw it was in pacing and construction. Mostly I was just delighted and smiling like an idiot all night.

Maybe, but not necessarily. When shows get recorded before opening on Broadway or The West End, a lot of changes may still be made. Sometimes many recordings are made before a show makes it to Broadway. Look at Jekyll and Hyde for example There were multiple recordings made of J&H before it finally reached The Great White Way. (I admit this is not quite the same, as most of those recordings are concept recordings).
Miss Saigon also recorded before opening. At that point Miss Saigon had a song titled The Sacred Bird near the end that would be cut before previews ended.
If the cast was having a listening party, then this recording may see the light of day yet; however, this recording will almost certainly not represent the show that makes it to Broadway, IF and when that happens.
Of course, this could go the way of those many cast recordings that get recorded and then never get released. Lestat, I'm looking at you!
What I find especially odd about the show itself other than the supposedly upcoming OCR is that a future Broadway production is as much as mired in quicksand neither admitting its sunk nor able to shake itself free.
I mean the pre-B'way production closed in Chicago in July (!) and the current season is now about 65% over.
