On Rural America: Understanding Isn't The Problem |

"They complain about coastal liberals, but the taxes from California and New York are what covers their farm subsidies, helps maintain their highways, and keeps their hospitals in their sparsely populated areas open for business."
Now this is a thread after my own heart!!!
Wish I could take credit. I saw it linked by a former professor of mine that I greatly respect and wanted to share.
I've been so down and angry since 11/9 and haven't been able to accurately express how I feel. This article speaks to and speaks for me in a way I never could. I'm sharing it on every platform I frequent. Thought maybe it could bring peace of mind to someone else.
Wow, that was without a doubt, one of the greatest and most incisive political rants I 've ever read on BWW, or anywhere, for that matter. My guru, George Carlin, would be proud! So, who again, CarolineOrChange, is "forsetti"?? Does TRMS know him/her?
I don't normally follow blogs, but someone I respect shared this on reddit and I stood in place and read the entire thing in a store. I don't know much about the author but there should be an 'about' section on his blog.
I feel like printing physical copies and distributing them. Everyone needs to be in possession of this material.
This well describes the area I grew up in and most of the areas near it that outlie Pittsburgh, both Western PA and Eastern OH farm countries, as well as the Northern WV panhandle. I spent much of my life with these folks. But what this doesn’t account for are the myriad formally educated, middle- and upper-to-middle-class, traditionally left-leaning, not especially religious moderates and Democrats I know who voted for Trump and are exhibiting a very similar kind of myopia/blindness, the sorts of people who six months ago would have said the idea that Barack Obama is a Kenyan Muslim is ludicrous -- and who might and probably would still say that today and even tomorrow -- but are beginning to exhibit the kind of irrational "skepticism" described above that could someday allow them to abandon themselves to beliefs like that. Right now that’s troubling me more because I can’t point to cultural shelteredness or religion as a reason for these usually quite reasonable people seeming so far gone.

Agree w most of everything stated.
Which leaves the question- "how do you solve a problem like Rural America?"
Bcause they are a big factor in preventing progress.
Bread & Circuses?
That's a new low for obnoxious gifs. Congratulations.
The fact that it was posted in response to this thread and topic is a new low for BWW. I'm actually stunned by it.

That, too.
It may have been deleted now, but it's not something I'll forget. Shed a whole new light on BroadwayConcierge.
Read about halfway. Might read the next half later, but it is scary to think middle America might never change.
Not sure if this article was shared on any of the larger election threads, which I've stopped reading. It's in line with this thread, so I'm sharing now:
I'm a Coastal Elite From the Midwest: The Real Bubble is Rural America

As someone who grew up in a rural, southern, deeply homogeneous environment -- and who has lived his entire adult life in large, "elite" cities -- I can attest that every word he writes is true. I have personally tried to move my conservative, rural family members to gain more experience and recognize more difference. Sometimes I think that's all you can do.
