Oh man, I get the big "this is going die out-of-town" feelings on this one.

If spongebob couldn't succeed in Chicago I doubt this will. They should be having it in the summer too. Fall/winter doesn't seem like a good fitting for this show.

Maybe it should open in Okeechobee.

I am unashamed to be a Parrothead and can't wait for this! Having said that, it's the kind of show that feels like it is meant for tours and regional performances, or maybe a Vegas casino, not Broadway.

Jimmy Buffet fans are some of the most loyal fans in the world. This is going to succeed.

This sounds great! I love Jimmy Buffett, and I agree with Sassy Sam - Parrotheads are very numerous and loyal, and will flock to this in boatloads once they find out about it. The question is whether they'll be willing to go all the way to Chicago or Broadway for it - usually they just wait for Jimmy to come to them, don't they? So I do think this will probably do a lot better once it's a touring show. Here's hoping it will get to that stage.

Also interesting that it says there will be new songs in it - so it's not purely a "Jimmy Buffett Jukebox Musical" then? Even if the new songs are also by Buffett. Still, it will be interesting to see what the actual ratio of new songs to Buffett Classics will be - I'm certainly at least expecting most if not all of his "Big 10" songs to make it in.

A Broadway musical cannot survive off of a niche audience alone. There are 28k "official" Parrotheads worldwide- that's 19 or 20 sold out Broadway houses in total. Assuming they would be willing to travel or even see a musical.

@Kad - that's fair. For some reason I thought there were a lot more than that, haha. But that's a fair point. This probably won't do too well on Broadway or in Chicago - but if/when it tours, I can see the tours doing fairly well as it draws people in.

...And yet, the Margaritaville restaurant chain was a failure.

Let's not forget that there was another attempt at a Buffet musical in the 1990's called "Don't Stop the Carnival" which didn't go further than its regional performances.

Buffet doesn't even own the Margaritaville name anymore:  He sold everything to an Asian company years ago...  I'm sure he's got little to nothing to do with this musical.

As for it's success, I don't see it happening.  Parrotheads want to see Jimmy, not a musical.  They won't flock to see this, whether in Chicago or NYC.  Perhaps this could work in Vegas.

Actually, the world premiere is at La Jolla in May. This is a second pre-Broadway production.

How was SpongeBob not a success?  I thought reviews were fairly decent?

I also fail to understand any connection between the two - very different audience base, one would think.

Spongebob was barely making its way through financially wise. I also compare them, because if a show that would hopefully market to families can't make it I don't think a show marketed to parrot heads can make it.

But then you are talking about AUDIENCE not quality of show.

I wish Paul Nolan could originate a role in a hit musical. I don't think this one's going to be it.

Are they expected to be performing at all the "tour" stops? I'd die to see Alison perform live again!

Edit: I don't know why I put the link down. Sorry about that

I asked my dad whether he wanted tickets to this or Hamilton when he visits in November. He immediately chose this one.

Guess I'll be seeing this !
