I know this is likely not going to happen, but I would be so interested in this if James Monroe Iglehart is the Genie.

They will cast a star in the role..
weren't they doing some kind of live action prequel about the origins of the Genie?

They scrapped that idea and the idea of The Beast solo movie after he critical success they'd received on Conderella and Jungle Book
Well they actually quashed two ideas that weren't direct remakes because other movies proved laziness makes money..
From a critical standpoint though Maleficent and Oz had not performed well, they struck critical gold with Frozen and Cinderella and it paved the way for the films to retain more of the original themes and music of the films Jungle Book further cemented this theory for them.
They are still honouring the legacy of the previous animated musical films whilst doing their own take and spins of the original source. They are finding more success critically and commercially producing adaptions rather than reimagining their films. They are going to can the Tinkerbell solo live action film too and make a Peter Pan film instead and don't be surprised if Rose Red gets shelved in favour of a Snow White remake.
Another live action Peter Pan? I liked the Jeremy Sumpter one. I realize that wasn't Disney and neither was Pan as far as I know but you'd think they'd be cautious with that title given that Pan didn't perform so well at the box office. I don't believe the other one did either, did it?
Well...they're hiring an Italian guy for Aladdin. (And it's shooting next year)

Aladdin is middle-Eastern...
Luke was my first thought when the project was first announced. he is ideal casting and his star has been slowly rising for the last few years

Ok??? And Aaron Burr was a white American born in Newark, New Jersey. Why can't we get over this traumatic casting conflict around here?
As such a fan of Disney, I'd think you'd have a more open mind to things.

Of course, I'm still going to see it and I'm sure he'll do a good job, but I'm just disappointed after they're hiring the right people for roles like Moana, Mulan, and Mowgili

Also: "THESE CHARACTERS ARE MIDDLE EASTERN".
Isn't this just one more instance of The Mouse wringing every last cent they can out of the work of Howard Ashman?
