The J.J. Abrams "Westworld" premiered on HBO tonight and it looks freaking fantastic. The original story has always been intriguing premise and this update looks like a good start. They're definitely trying for a big new hit. The cast is great, Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, the always great Jeffrey Wright and dreamy James Marsden.

Sets, cinematography, and music is all top notch. It looks like they're spending a lot of $$$$.

The Paint It Black Sequence was outstanding ( took me a little while to work out what the music was ) over all a very enjoyable first espiode

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

I liked the earlier use of Black Hole Sun, too.

I'll agree, I was very pleasantly surprised.  Looking forward to more.

Anyone know if this is an open-ended series with multiple seasons to come, or a one-shot ten-episode mini series?

Their  plan is multiple seasons to come.  I guess it all depends on ratings.

In trying to block out some aspects of the "real" world for an hour, I watched the premiere again and damned, it is good. I read some background articles; looked for the "easter eggs"; Ramin Djawadi's original music and grand orchestral performances of "other material" really are another star of the show. The action sequences are very cinematic and you can see how many ways the character storylines can play out. The IMDB score already has it as a 9.3, (that doesn't happen every day). I hope it stays on track.

And then again, there's James Marsden.

Curious on the multi-season trajectory, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Don't trust that IMDB rating though, fanboys spend their lives hyping up scores and deflating others.

I rather liked it as well. Curious to see where it goes. Ed Harris was great. Paint It Black was hot...

I guess competition with the debates and football, HBO decided to start Sunday viewing early. The 2nd episode of "Westworld" is on HBO GO and On Demand.

I just finished it and it stays strong. Several new cast members get their story lines started so it looks like the show can (and probably will), be able to support multiple story arcs and characters. The music and songs remain very cool and atmospheric.

If you haven't gotten around to watching it yet, Westworld stays very good with episode 2. It's actually had a special scene noted and compared to the debate last night. Someone posted the photo of Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) with the fly on her face (that she kills) with a photo of Hillary at the debate with the fly that landed on her face. Some people are so observant! So look out for the flies!

I always wondered if Hillary was a robot! Westworld on HBO Wow! Paint It Black!

Do you think the multi-season plan is sustainable? I mean, the premise is fantastic and it's very well-done, (the film always intrigued me as a child) but it just feels like they will be limited as to the story they can tell. The robots will go rogue. That's a given. I worry that the story beneath the story beneath the story might feel a little Lost-like. I suppose the AI could go off-campus, so to speak, and they could be in the futuristic world. I certainly hope they can pull it off. I am in major support of Sir Anthony being on my screen weekly.

" I think it is very easy to do another setting Like American Horror. Maybe at another part of the park where instead of Wild West, it could be  the Fabulous 50s, or even Pre Civil War South, or The Sun Kings France. then the issues of Slavery and Struggle can be part of it.

They mentioned Roman World in passing in Episode 2, I believe, establishing that there IS another world at least in the plan. I think the creators have established season 1 takes place entirely within Westworld but the next seasons may include appearances from the other compounds.

The original film had various sections such as Roman world etc. Interesting the Yul Brunner character is a robot in the film but here he is a recurring guest.

Despite not reading or seeing the original sources, I am still enjoying this! I knew a bit about it from my boyfriend, who has seen the movie, but was surprised (and a few times plain scared) of the show and what they've done. It raises some interesting questions and I think it balances out programs like This Is Us.

The relation to the original movie is slim at best -- just the idea of the theme park going slowly wrong.  The TV series is a much richer and stranger experience, and I'm digging on it a lot.  The acting is just marvelous across the board.

The one danger sign, for me, is the whole business with the "maze" -- the whole metaphysical "game with a game" thing can get really arch and over-clever and annoying if they don't do it just right.

And you get to look at that dreamy James Marsden.  I mean, come on.

I love Marsden. I even watched him in that Nicholas Sparks movie.....which was a B movie at best. So kissable.

I have exactly the same concerns.  It's almost like they're trying to leverage the tween dystopian novel craze and while I don't hate them, I really don't want to see this story going down that really predictable road.

The scene with Anthony Hopkins in last night's episode was a lesson in slow-burn menace. This is the best he's been in a very long time.

I also love how the series is approaching the trope of "AI becomes sentient"- for Dolores, it's a search for meaning and identity, while with Maeve it's a horror story.
