Carnegie Deli Will Close This Year |
Not surprising, considering they were closed for such a lengthy amount of time because of their illegal gas hookup.
Sad to see it go. They were incredibly overpriced and became another kitschy tourist trap, but their mountains of pastrami were delicious. My mother would always take some pastrami and tongue back home to my father and grandmother when she visited.
You're right, we'll always have Katz's. However, at times I am more partial to the Second Avenue Deli myself. It may be on the semi pricier side but far more reasonable than Carnegie, and one that has always had a personal place in my heart even with the "wanted" poster in the storefront window and all.

Why can't the business be sold ? There is always a line to get in when I walk bye. There must be a number of issues.
Well, as I mentioned, they were shut down for last year because of an illegal gas hookup. And they lost a lawsuit a few years ago from employees who were underpaid.
I thought this was Mr Roxys job... like Limelight Mike and his opening nights.
I loved it every time I ate there...even though I trimmed my pastrami down by half every time I ordered it. I was full and always hoped a homeless person would enjoy what I couldn't finish...
Very, very sad news.
Of the three times I've been to New York, I would always go here, didn't matter if it was over priced or not, sad to see it go.
Are the sandwiches worth the price? I have wanted to eat there but the prices kept me away.
For me yes they are worth the price, it's an over top sandwich plus the coconut cream pie is insane as well ( but not the best thing ever, ah screw it, skip the pie! )

If you're an NYC local that answer is no. The best way to describe it it's a touristy version of an NYC deli. The two that are more preferred by locals would either be Katz's downtown or the Second Avenue Deli.

Carnegie Deli closes it's doors at midnight!
Harper-Levine refused a $10 million dollar offer to keep it open...go figure.
I'm going to try to pay them a visit later and have one last Pastrami sandwich for the road!
