I've recently put heavy thought into the actresses who have or are about to take on the role of Shug Avery in this current revival of The Color Purple.
Jennifer Hudson although very green and new to theatrical acting and the task of developing a layered nuanced character on her own without the constant handling of the director, vocally rocked the part and looked stunning as well, and according to my friends who have seen the show multiple times, reported that she grew into the character more and more, and towards the end of her run, knocked the role out of the park. I look forward to her growth as an actress and for her to return to Broadway and really show us what she's made of.
Heather Headley, brought an excitement to the role with her interpretation as the ailing, sexual bluesy singer. Although I felt she was as vocally miscast as Audra in Dreamgirls (no fault of her own, after hearing Jennifer rip into a song, most other singers fail in comparison, although some of you seemed to prefer Heather's alley cat like yodel) Heather as Shug renewed my interest and gave me a greater appreciation in her ability, and I hope she doesn't stay away from the stage for too long, there are so many parts that I know she would be splendid in.
As far as Jennifer Holliday is concerened I have absolutely NO FAITH in her ability too pull off this role. But at the same time I believe that John Doyle must be working on an interpretation that suits her. Somebody on another thread already expressed Holliday's awkwardness and lack of sexual appeal. I almost cringe at the thought of the kiss scene between her and Cynthia. I think Ms. Holliday is a beautful woman but can't see how she fits into this role, but I am interested in seeing her take, because I believe this role acting wise and vocally, require things that we've never seen from her.
If I can dreamcast this part as of right now, if the show runs long enough would be Taraji P. Henson. I'm not necessarily her biggest fan but I do believe this role would be perfect for her, and the she would embody the best parts of Hudson and Headley to the role. She would bring a dramatic, comedic, and authentic protrayal that I would be happy to see. I know it's far fetched for her to do it with her other projects and not sure how long TCP will last when Cynthia leaves, but it's just a thought.
The thought you've put into this dreamcast is interesting. However, I would highly suggest you change the subject of this thread to reflect that it is dreamcasting and not rumors or speculation.
After rewatching season 3 of American Horror Story, I would LOVE to see Angela Bassett as Shug. I'm not sure if she sings, but I'm sure she would knock it out of the park acting wise.
