Question for everyone, as I was watching Miss Saigon tonight at the cinema (wonderful btw) it struck me that The American Dream sung by the engineer, is a great 11 o'clock number, but then I wondered, are 11oclock numbers solely the domain of female singers? And if not, are there other shows with great male 11 oclock numbers in them?

No, there is nothing gender-specific about the term "11 o'clock number" in the slightest. I don't mean to be rude, but what was it about the term that made you think it could possibly only apply to women?

Yes, there are many shows in which men sing 11 o'clock numbers.
Being Alive from Company Edelweiss from The Sound of Music Goodbye from Catch Me If You Can Hold Me In Your Heart from Kinky Boots How It Ends from Big Fish I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face from My Fair Lady It All Fades Away from The Bridges of Madison County Make Them Hear You from Ragtime Memphis Lives in Me from Memphis
Thank you, Jeffrey, for the helpful list. I haven't seen most of those shows, which would explain some of my ignorance on the gender equity matter of 11 o'clock numbers.
Well, except for being alive. Saw Patti LuPone do that last week but I guess that doesn't help
I think A Funny Thing...Forum has more 11 o'clock numbers for men than any other show. "Free," "Impossible," "Bring Me My Bride," "Everybody Ought to Have a Maid."
Ado Annie, I'm a bit confused by your statement. How can one musical have multiple 11 o'clock numbers? I thought the 11 O'clock number is specifically one showstopping song near the end (usually the 2nd to last song), serving as the musical climax. Or are you using 11 o'clock number to just mean showstoppers in general?
Thanks everyone for the thoughtful comments, as I read through it realize it definitely is my own ignorance regarding shows that colors my limited perspective about the 11o clock number. Time for me to see some more shows!
