Any comic book fans? Thoughts on DC's Rebirth?

My other obsession beside musical theater is comic books and super heroes. Anyone else reading any Rebirth titles? Which ones? What are your likes or dislikes?

I'm historically a fan, but Marvel and DC have both done everything they can to drive me away. They just don't produce comics I'm interested in anymore, so I haven't checked out Rebirth. But the concept sounds like more back pedaling and desperate grabbing for readers (which, ironically, has the opposite effect on me than the one intended).

They are definitely trying to win back fans they lost after New 52 (which I mostly liked). Flash is my favorite superhero, and I am not loving his Re-birth, But Supergirl, Titans, and especially NIghtwing have all been really good reads that I don't mind paying 3 bucks a pop for!

I loved the New 52 at first (and I was super excited about it even before it started), but too much bad writing and artwork and too much second guessing themselves (like getting rid of the original Batwing, who I thought was fascinating, and replacing him with a boring and generic American guy) drove me away.

I gave up reading comic books a very long time ago...especially after the 5,000th re-boot of the DC Universe and the constantly killing off of Batman and Superman and the 17,000 new origin for Princess Diana/Wonder Woman.

I'm me. I do me...and I chill.

I've probably mentioned somewhere in my yesteryears here on the ol' BWW that my husband and I met through DC comics letter columns (print). We went to New York on our honeymoon, toured both the DC and Marvel offices while there, and we were treated to lunch by both companies. This was 1980.

For probably the past ten years or more, my husband's interest in comics has pretty much stayed up there while mine has waned, at least for most modern super-hero comics. For titles he still reads regularly today, I look for deals through Ebates and magazine sites. (Neither of us has ever been big board and baggers anyway, and there have only been maybe two times that we requested a replacement issue of a book due to its being mangled in the mail.)

Hubby prefers print copies (he's same way with books) but also peruses Scans Daily, or whatever it's called, and I'm sure, some others. He follows a number of web comics too. He goes to the comic book shop for the odd issue of something he doesn't suscribe to via mail and for cheap sidewalk sale copies of old comics.

He's not as big on Comixology as I am. The majority of what I buy on Comixology are DC and Marvel issues that originally came out when I was a kid for 12 cents a pop. Those and earlier issues. I have to watch that I don't go crazy buying those. (Lately I've also been re-reading Elfquest via Comixology, which is fun since I find that I had forgotten a lot of the specifics of the story.) I was mostly a DC kid growing up, but I read Marvels here and there along with the usual "kid" stuff, like Archie, Harvey, Dell, Gold Key, Classics Illustrated... I gradually gave up childhood comics, somewhere around age 13, in favor of teen mags like Tiger Beat and 16, returning to an interest in comic books when the first Superman (as in Chris Reeve) movie came out.

For me, I think I'm in the same boat as you, CarlosAlberto. Too many DC reboots to hold my interest. Overall, I'd rather read the old stuff. Maybe a lot of it on my part is nostalgia. "Why, back in my day, they wrote comic books for kids, by gosh!"  Or at least, kids could read and enjoy them, but looking back, the art in those old superhero comics wasn't necessarily "kids comics" art. Sure, today there are comics geared specifically toward kids, but it seems like the art in those books is styled more toward kids too, whereas I grew up reading comics with artwork by people like Curt Swan, Wayne Boring, Carmine Infantino, Jack Kirby, etc.

Contrary to all this nostalgia, I did read and enjoy Max Landis' recent 7-issue Superman: American Alien series. Or maybe it's nostalgia that made me like that!

As for Rebirth, I haven't read any yet. Maybe one of these days I'll get an itch and read some of my husband's subscription copies, but I'm in no rush.  In a few years, it'll just be something else!

I'm really liking some of the rebirth  titles so far. Aquaman and superman and wonder woman are some of the best so far. I also gave up purchasing physical comics years ago. It's a pleasure not to have to store anything as I couldn't care less about collecting and I enjoy reading on my tablet more anyway.

Personally I need breaks from the superhero comics and Image comics do that for me. They have way more variety of non superhero stories.

If you're looking for a great Image title (or just a good comic series overall in my opinion) I cannot suggest Saga enough. It came out as a regular comic, however, like many comic books that are one storyline, it was put together into a graphic novel format. I believe that as of June of this year, there are six graphic novel volumes altogether. I know that the first volume had issues 1-6. Volume 2 starts issues 7 to 10 etc etc.
