I thought their presentation was appropriately tech-heavy. I tuned in a little late - there was a choral piece used as part of the soundtrack. The vocal parts were very dense, and the harmonies were similar to those of Scandinavian composers like Knut Knystedt. The choir sounded like it might have been composed of women or children.
I don't know if it was part of Rio's 'handoff', or Tokyo's presentation, but I'm obsessed with that choral piece! Sadly, because video of the Olympic coverage is so overly controlled, I cannot find video online to research info about that piece. Does anybody remember it, or know the composer, or have any info regarding a CD recording of the piece?
I loved when the prime minister popped out of the green tube.
ramdom question: who would open the games in Tokyo? The emperor or the prime minister? I know Queen Elizabeth opened the London games, but I wasn't sure if this would be different.

The 1964 Olympics were opened by the emperor so I'm guessing it won't be the pm

Even more recently, the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano were opened by Emperor Akihito.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

I thought the Tokyo presentation at the Rio Closing Ceremony nailed the vibe I got from Tokyo itself when I was there back in the year 2000 for 10 days. Even back then I felt like I had stepped into a city from the year 2100-- eye-poppingly futuristic, youth-oriented to an extreme, design-rich and emotionally remote. I'm a pretty worldly traveler, but I'm sure my typically American upbringing got in the way of me seeing the true spirit of the Japanese people behind the mask I was presented with. Japan is of course an amazing country, but for me one of the countries as unlike America as anywhere I've been. (Beijing by contrast felt like a very recognizable hybrid of a futuristic New York City to me.)
So, yeah, that circle of rolling robot-girls closing in on the projected red sun of the Japanese flag was a perfect kickoff to a show that was weird and unfathomable and beautiful and goofily childlike (Mario Bros., anyone?) Can't wait to see what they cook up for the real Games in 2020.
