I am coming to New York early September, and I am debating a few shows to see. I currently have tickets to Aladdin, which is what my girlfriend wants to see. I have time to see three other shows. I have seen the Book of Mormon, Fiddler on the Roof, Finding Neverland, Fun Home, Hamilton, Les Mis, Lion King, Phantom, Something Rotten, and Wicked. I have no desire to see an American in Paris, Beautiful, Cats, Chicago, or Motown. I am really debating between (1) On Your Feet, Matilda, Waitress, School of Rock, and Kinky Boots (Two Shows out of these five); (2) The Humans or An Act of God (1 Show). I am kind of intrigued about seeing An Act of God on the final performance. What would you all recommend? And what shows could I get on TDF, if I decided to wait to purchase tickets. THANKS

Don't see Act of God.

Is your girlfriend interested in Waitress? I would say you should see that together. Kinky Boots and The Humans are also great.

I know these 2 aren't on your list, but they should be, in my opinion:  Fun Home is the 2nd best (by a very close margin) show on Broadway, and it should not be missed, but it closes on September 10. Also, The Color Purple includes the best single performance on Broadway at this moment, as well as a great ensemble, and also should not be missed.

I agree that if you're willing to go off the list, Fun Home is a must see before it closes. If you really are set on your list, I 100% recommend Waitress, it's amazing

I vote The Humans and Waitress for sure. School of Rock is FUN, but it didn't really AMAZE me or touch me like Waitress did. And Kinky Boots is good, but energy has definitely gone down since the original cast... And Fun Home is great but kind of low energy. Really depends on the kind of show you feel like, but I feel like Waitress is a must-see. Matilda is great for kids... And On Your Feet! is super high fun energy with the whole cool Hispanic feel, but plot is kind of weak. If it was me I'd go with The Humans, Waitress, and either On Your Feet! Or School of Rock

You should see The Color Purple and Waitress.  They're both phenomenal.  The Humans is also fantastic.

You absolutely should see Kinky Boots! It's honestly the best of those you mentioned.

I would go for The Color Purple and Waitress... Color Purple is easily the best show on Broadway right now.

As for An act of G-d vs. Humans...all depends on what you two enjoy more as far as genres go and what type of story you're more interested in. An Act of Gd is really hysterical though and a good laugh.

I have already seen Fun Home, and I really wasn't looking at the Color Purple. My pick was Waitress, but I also want to give my girlfriend a fun energetic show that she would enjoy. I am thinking On Your Feet, but I'm not sure if I should get tickets now or try and get them on TDF. Or if that is really the show we should see! My big debate though is between An Act of God or The Humans... I have no idea!

100% The Humans. Like no question in my opinion. An Act of God is super funny but I mean The Humans won the Tony for a reason. It's really really good. And yes I mean Matilda is great for all ages, but like you know what you're gonna get. If Ana Villafañe is still in On Your Feet by then I would definitely see it because she brings so much energy! And it's a really feel- good show.

I know you said you're not interested in it but in my opinion, Beautiful is a better version of On Your Feet if you're looking for that type of show. I would def recommend Matilda especially with it closing soon and it's def high energy

Waitress is pretty high energy, funny, and heartwarming as well. Keala Settle is hysterical in it, couldn't get enough of her.

I personally didn't love the Humans as much as everyone else. It is most certainly the better play, but in terms of pure enjoyment, I actually enjoyed Act or God much more. (Although I saw it with Jim Parsons last summer so I can't speak for this version.). It really is more of a standup act than a play because there's not really much plot but I thought it was hilarious. The Humans is certainly very well done and the performances are top notch, but it's a completely different vibe.  It's funny, but more real, sarcastic humor about family interactions. And at its core it's a drama not a comedy. I can certainly see why some people love it, so it just depends what kind of show you're looking for.  Just very different shows.

From your list of musicals I would pick Waitress and School of Rock (which is a fun, energetic show).  Waitress has some fun high energy parts as well. I only saw On your Feet in Chicago but I'd say the first act was fun and high energy. The second act not quite so much.

But like some others, if you're willing to go off list I would choose the color purple over anything else. It really is head and shoulders above the original and the performances are sublime. It is definitely a tear jerker so not the same vibe as the shows you list, though, so again, it may not be what you personally are looking for.

I haven't been to New York in awhile so I haven't been buying tickets or checking TKTS and others can correct me if I'm wrong, but from the grosses it appears that Waitress, School of Rock, and the Humans are all at near 100% capacity so those may be tickets to get ahead of time if they're your picks (although I think you still have some time to decide for all 3. Waitress is the one selling the best.)

On Your Feet! is more enjoyable than you would expect.

The Color Purple is the best thing on Broadway. Not to be missed.

Of your listed options, School of Rock is the only one I've seen, but it warmed my chilly, child-averse heart and it is a nice 2.5 hours out.

Of the musicals you listed, Matilda is closing so perhaps watch that one. I felt it was a very British show and found it hard to understand at times. I just watched School of Rock last weekend and was impressed (yes the kids all play the instruments!) Very high energy and even my 'ol self cried during two songs. All the shows you listed have been on TKtS as of late. Either way enjoy your time in nyc!

Although you were not planning to see The Color Purple, I'd like to suggest you make it a priority to see!  I've seen many of the shows you've mentioned, and it rivals most of them. Cynthia ' s performance is legendary. The ensemble is incredibly strong. The show is an electric experience.

OP, I'm one of the ones that suggested Fun Home, a show you've already seen. Sorry about that, I guess my eyes aren't what they used to be!  I really don't think you could go wrong with any of your choices.  Have a great time!

I would go with Waitress and Matilda out of your musical choices. Like others have said, it's a very heart-warming, funny, at times high-energy story and I think your girlfriend will enjoy it. I myself loved it and can't stop listening to the cast recording now.

Matilda is in my eyes superior to School of Rock, just based on the source material alone (one is based on a Roald Dahl novel, the other on a comedy movie). Both have cute, talented kids, but I just think Matilda has the stronger story, and I personally liked the music better (I wasn't originally interested in seeing it but changed my mind after listening to the cast recording and falling in love with the music and the clever, intricate lyrics). School of Rock is fun, but not much more. Matilda is also fun, but also has some depth to the story.

Definitely see Waitress though!

I think if you're already not very interested in Color Purple isn't fair enough for you not to see it. It all comes down to interest and taste... and mood even, so don't see a show you're not interested in just because people tell you it's a must see. Doesn't mean you're gonna enjoy it. I liked it fine, and I did cry at the end, but I still found it hard to relate and it didn't speak to me as much as some other things did (and didn't care for the music much either). Because I lived in NY for a while I made a point to go out of my comfort zone or whatever and see everything, whether I was terribly interested in it or not. Sometimes you discover something you love (that happened with Violet for example), but more often than not those you were most excited about are the ones you end up enjoying the most! At least in my experience. So just stick with your gut :)

Sorry about tacking on to this thread, but I didn't want to start a new discussion for such a similar question. I'm coming to New York in late August and I'm trying to decide between 40-50 dollar seats in the 400s for Fun Home and rushing The Color Purple. I know these are both supposed to be great shows, but does anyone have a preference for one or the other? Thanks for any help!

My choice, by a very small margin, is Fun Home.  There's not a bad seat in that theater. Also, you'll never have another chance to see it in this venue, and with this incredible cast. You really can't go wrong with either choice, but one day you'll regret missing Fun Home (in my opinion).
