Hi All, I'm coming to New York for a weekend but I'm super broke, so I was thinking I would try to get tickets through a Rush. The shows I'm interested in (that have rushes) are The Color Purple and Something Rotten. I was wondering if anyone might be able to offer any helpful tips, specifically when is a good time to arrive? I know the box office opens at 10 most days, but how realistic is it that I get a seat if I actually arrive at that time?

Alternatively, would you say that TKTS is a more realistic/cheaper option than Rush at individual theatres?

Thanks in advance!

Can't give much advice about rush tickets but TKTS is almost definitely going to be more expensive. Even when it's a 50% discount it's still (generally in my experience) 50% off the highest priced seats, so you're looking at $75-90, instead of the $30-40 for rush. You do probably have a better chance at getting seats, so you could always keep it in mind as a backup if rush is sold out for the show you want. Something Rotten and Color Purple have both been on TKTS pretty regularly lately.

Something Rotten rush is definitely easier. I went on a Sunday and got there an hour early, and I was close to the front of the line. Many people got rush tickets no problem. For the Color Purple, you would most likely have to get there a lot earlier.

Yes, The Color Purple rush is nuts. You'll want to get there around 6am or even earlier if you want to be close to the front of the line. When I rushed the show in June, I got there at 7am and I was something like 8th in line, and that was BEFORE the Tonys.

Did you still manage to get seats? How were they?

Thanks for all the advice you guys! One more thing, if I planned to go on a Sunday when the Box Office opens at 12PM, would it still be advisable to go super early, like at 6AM? Or is demand even bigger on Sundays because it's the weekend?

Yes, I did. However, I think the cut-off was probably only a few people behind me. Seats were 3rd row or so way off to the side. Not the best seats, but not bad either. I didn't miss anything major.

Not sure about about TCP, but for SR I only got there an hour early on a Sunday so no for SR.
