I'm leading a Broadway musical concert + discussion group for seniors this week on the theme of "Beginnings" (or new beginnings).

Wondering if people here might be able to help me generate a list of classic Broadway songs (preferably from the Golden Age of musicals) that relate directly to beginnings!

Thanks!!

Sounds like a rough topic to discuss with seniors since all of the songs listed, especially those mentioned not from the Golden Age, only feel sort of insipid for anyone over forty.

Even Before The Parade Passes By is a difficult topic if one is over fifty and has to consider their limited options at that point in life- unless the discussion is about  possibilities for their grandchildren, Send In The Clowns sort of best suits the moment by the great man himself.  Still, it is a melancholy moment and tune to discuss.

About 20 years ago I sang in an a cappella group. One of the songs we sang was the Boyz II Men song, "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday," which is a song about the end of a love affair. One day we sang a concert at a retirement home and we included that song on our set list. About halfway through the song we realized that it was a really bad choice for a retirement home concert. Lyrics like, "If we get to see tomorrow," and "I thought we'd get to see forever but forever's gone away," have a really different meaning.

"Morning Glow" from Pippin

Granted, in the context of the show, it's about starting over after committing patricide/regicide... but it's a lovely song nonetheless.

I'm surprised it took that long to mention In the Beginning LOLZ!

At the Beginning from Anastasia.

I've found that it seems a lot of these songs reside in the contemporary realm more than the Golden Age realm.
