Another Piece Of Old NY Bites The Dust

The Campbell Apartments will go into the history books 7/28 .

 

In the MTA'S never ending search for money, it is evicting this NY icon for higher rent even  though the current owners offered to pay $800,000 yearly rent instead of its current $300,000. Not enough for the money grubbing MTA. If you have never seen it, go before it disappears

The Campbell Apartment is an amazing place to enjoy a cocktail.  Sorry to hear it's going away.

This is a bit misleading. Yes, the Campbell Apartment bar as it is now will close after almost twenty years (hardly "old NY", but it will reopen under new ownership after renovations. Since the space is landmarked, nothing can be done to structure of the space.

Luckily, the inside is landmarked. The new owner will retain the interior but replace the bar and dumb down what made it special. Bottom line is you can come in to the new establishment in  jeans and flip flops.  The prices of everything will skyrocket to pay for what the new owner pays in rent. The comfy chairs you sat in will go as well. Most of the physical attributes will stay but the heart of the place and what made it special will go out with the trash

Last Christmas. We went every Christmas for a number of years.

I can't feel as bad for this as I felt for the Edison or the Helen Hayes and the Morosco.

It was a faux thing all along.

Comparing The Edison to this is like comparing Apples & Oranges. The Edison was what was left of an old dying Times Square.  The new Times Square is a mall on steroids. I felt worse about the Roxy & Paramount theaters going than I did over the Morosco & Helen Hayes. The Hayes had a gorgeous  façade and rather ordinary interior. The Morosco, as I recall had history and not much else. Neither one stands up to most  of the remaining theaters.  

It is all a matter of personal taste I guess.

Honey, the prices at The Campbell Apartment are already sky-high. Way more than they're worth. I'm with PJ on this one: It's not Old New York, it's Fauxld New York.

I honestly think that once again, Roxy is being a tad overly dramatic as to what will be the end result to the Campbell Apartment. 

As for Tekserve, although I am sad to see it go, I feel like its demise is its own doing of sorts. Their repair costs were high compared to The Apple Store. That's all well and good, and a great way for them to keep their business afloat. At least when there weren't any Apple Stores in the city. Now that there are, I have found that most repairs cost less to get done at an Apple Store VS getting it done at Tekserve. I think that they priced themselves out of business. I get it, when they were really the only game in town it made sense to go there. However, most people that I know who have Apple products tend to go to the Apple Store since the prices are cheaper to get things fixed. Although it was/is damn near impossible to compete with the Apple Store, I think that if they lowered their prices on things a little, the loyal fanbase that they've established over the years would still stay there. Rather than them leaving to go someplace else that costs less to the customer.
