Which show for September? Beautiful, Color Purple or School of Rock?

Due to Shuffle Along's closing my mum and I have to swap our tickets for another Telecharge musical (I don't want a refund as I'll just lose out on foreign currency conversion fees) for September 20-27.  It seems that our only options are Beautiful, Color Purple or School of Rock (we've already seen Avenue Q, Fiddler, Matilda and Phantom either on Broadway or in Melbourne fairly recently). So which of these 3 would you pick? Or is there something new coming that I don't yet know about?

My issue is I want to see something new and fresh that I won't be able to see in Australia for awhile. However, I have tickets to a much smaller production of the Color Purple a month later and then will probably be able to see Beautiful in early 2018. On the other hand, I don't know if my mum in particular will enjoy School of Rock as much as the other two as I'm concerned it's a bit too kid-oriented.

We enjoy a wide variety of musicals (e.g. our favourites for this year have probably been Violet [in the same tiny theatre as Color Purple], Little Shop of Horrors and the Sound of Music) and for this trip also have tickets to Waitress and Hamilton and will hopefully add Something Rotten - so a particular style of music/show isn't really a positive or a negative!

I would definitely go with the Color Purple. This production is very unique and is not to be missed. Erivo is giving a wonderful performance as are Heather Headley and Danielle Brooks.

I did also enjoy School of Rock a lot more than expected and it's a fun show, but I don't personally feel the need to see it again, while I've made a return trip to TCP.

Also just FYI every time I've exchanged tickets through telecharge they've refunded the past purchase and charged my card again, even where it was an even swap in terms of cost. I've never had a show cancelled though.

Without hesitation,  The Color Purple.  You will not see a performance such as Erivo's for quite some time.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Another vote for The Color Purple.

While I loved School of Rock, I think it would work with anyone in the roles. You need to see The Color Purple with this cast.

A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.

I'm contributing nothing to this chorus, but I have to add my vote for The Color Purple. Nothing like it.

I'll throw in a vote for Beautiful. The Color Purple just wasn't my kind of show. It certainly had it's great moments but it didn't touch me in a way some other shows did. I certainly don't feel like I need to see it again, this or another production. Since you already have tickets in Melbourne, just skip it and see Beautiful on Broadway - and then skip the Melbourne production of that... or go again if you love which is quite possible!

I saw Color Purple and School of Rock last week.  Hands down you should go with Color Purple.

Saw Beautiful on tour last night. Enjoyed it immensely.  Those Songs! Abby Mueller was so convincing I heard people arguing whether or not it was  the real Carole King who took the final curtain bow.

Thanks for everyone's advice. We were all set to go for The Color Purple, but I've just got an email from Telecharge, in response to my email to them asking if it would be possible to swap for a different show because I did NOT want a refund, saying they've refunded my order! They also refunded it to a credit card that is no longer active; fortunately my bank forwarded the amount to my new card.

Luckily due to Brexit the exchange rate is worse than when I booked the tickets so I'm only down about $7, but it's still annoying to have lost money without anything at all to show for it (not even the original tickets)! So now I'm not sure if I'll add a 4th Broadway show after all, especially as they've added an extra preview for the Hedwig tour so I can now see that in San Francisco. I might just leave it for now and see what's available on TKTS/Today Tix/Audience Rewards closer to the date.

Thanks for your advice anyway guys; much appreciated (even if not needed in the end)!
