I am kind of digging this summer show too. I think what makes it work is the tension between the characters. It will be interesting to see where it goes. Some sexy casting!!!

Ellen Barkin is creeping me out.  I was intrigued by the uneasiness the show provokes.  It definitely reminded me of the "American Crime" vibe.

Glad to see Shawn Hatosy again.  Loved him on "Southland."

Some very hot men, no doubt.  Mr. Speedman is particularly tasty.  I liked the original film ANIMAL KINGDOM a good deal, and was curious how this will work as a series.  I don't recall Smurf being as overtly monstrous in the film as she is in the series -- as I remember you didn't really know what she was capable of until fairly late in the film, during one really monstrous police interrogation scene where Jacki Weaver went from being sweetly dim to coldly savage in nothing flat.

Yeah, Smurf is a sweet motherly figure at the beginning of the film. It probably wouldn't have translated well to TV. Knowing that Smurf could turn on anyone in an instant for a TV show ratchets up the tension right away.

And not to spoil anything, but it seems that one of the characters is having a same-sex relationship very much on the down-low...

It is rather obvious unless you are not spoiling anything for those who have not stared watching the series yet.  Are we to assume that the father of the nephew is one of the uncles?
