Amelie played at Berkeley Rep to rave reviews, including one in the LA Times so you can pretty much predict that the reviews will be very positive. It is going to open in NY this spring. In fact, I believe it already a theater in hand.

Thanks, little_sally! I put it on the list.

broadwayguy91, I'm not sure it will be qualified as a new musical due to their stipulation about properties being "in the know" (like Hedwig).

I just updated the list with Play options as well. Please keep the corrections coming, as they're very helpful.

The Cherry Orchard is most likely going to be considered a revival (though I can't imagine it'll be nominated.)

Is The Present definitely considered new?

Wait, isn't The Present just Platonov?

"Cate Blanchett and Richard Roxburgh succumb to the intoxicating power of lust and obsession in the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of The Present, coming to Broadway for 13 weeks only. A new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s first play, most commonly referred to as Platonov, The Present unfolds over the course of a raucous weekend birthday celebration in the Russian countryside. "

So do you think The Present will be ruled as a play revival then?

It's an adaptation. The eligibility committee would have to decide if it is sufficiently different enough of a property to be considered a new work.

Also: if The Encounter is considered a new play, wouldn't Oh, Hello also be considered? (Personally, I'm not sure either would be).

Will Oh, Hello be eligible for a Best Play?  Or would it be considered to be in the defunct 'best special theatrical event' category?

It has a script (technically).

I think both are technically "new plays" yeah. The Present seems to me like a revival not a new play, but haven't seen this adaptation yet.

I saw The Encounter recently and Id be very surprised if it was a "special event". Are people thinking that just because of the sound aspect? Its still a play, with a script, that tells a story. It just does it differently than most. Most of the previous special events (when the category was still in use) were concerts, stand up comedy, or circus.

The Present seems like it'll fall under the same ruling as Therese Raquin last season: New Play. Its an adaptation, not a translation.

There were also no special rulings on Paramour today...so wouldn't it be eligible under Musical? Obviously it includes circus, but it does have a score and actors.

"

not to mention a book too, which was recently revamped (Bret Shuford mentioned on his youtube channel that his part got bumped up a bit and now has more scenes / lines etc) but the changes were made after the show was frozen (after previews) so I guess they're not particularly bothered about nominations etc.

It's not the same. Therese Raquin was adapted from a novel, not from another play.

Also, Singin' in the Rain was officially postponed, per this

OH, HELLO will certainly be eligible for Best Play.  I don't see why it wouldn't be...

I also don't understand the confusion about Holiday Inn. They're even marketing it as a "new" Irving Berlin musical. Why do people think it'll be a revival?

Arguing that Holiday Inn is a revival is like saying Shuffle Along, or the musical sensation of 1921 and all the followed, was a revival

the producers of Shuffle Along did argue that though

"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."

Only bc they knew they wouldn't win anything against Hamilton, and they would've had a great shot at revival (TCP still would've won, though).

Yes, they argued that it was a revival.  ...But lost.
