I don't mean to be negative but I'm just wondering what do you guys think is the worst 'best musical' tony award winner or nominee. mine would probably be 'SUNSET BLVD' because it totally did not deserve the tony as its only competitor was a jukebox musical as there were no other new shows around that time. But that's just my opinion :)

By your example, I feel you really want to know about Best Musical Tony winners you find undeserving because of who they were competing against.

I really can't think of any Tony year in which any production was so awful that the category may as well had been declared deserted (that includes Sunset Boulevard or any year where the competition could have been perceived as unfair) due to lack of nominees)

If you want to get into the discussion of this show vs, this show; the can of worms has been opened a trillion times and gets nowhere. It is what it is.

Sorry about this Menken, I still love you, but Aladdin should not have been nominated for Best Musical, James deserved his Tony, but the rest was...eh.

I disagree with your reasoning in the original post, however.  BEST means best of that particular year.  It doesn't even mean the show is good, but perhaps not as big a turkey as the other nominee.

Heck, you could rank ANYTHING from Best to worst: illness, psychopaths, jobs.   Doesn't mean its good.  "something" has to be the best of the lot.

I've little affection for MemphisOncePhantom of the OperaLes MisérablesSunset BoulevardContact, or Spring Awakening, but I think I'd identify the "worst" Best Musical as Two Gentlemen of Verona. The show itself is surprisingly inert, despite the frenetic story/book and the very loud score. But even more, that anyone would think it a better show than the amazing and still living Follies boggles the mind.

Memphis, no doubt. What a wretched season that was! Makes me appreciate the last few even more.

I couldn't see Memphis pulling it off in any other year but that's just my opinion. It lucked out with the timing.

Those are the big five for me. There were many I didn't agree with or the competition was too slight but for the most part, a lot of the winners weren't overly horrendous.

Same. I could not wait for that bland and predictable show to end.
