Classics Such as Les Miserable and Phantom feature a seraphic, emotional score- a rather intense view on musical theatre. Do you think there is room for another emotional score in the West End or are the chessier, newer productions (such as Matilda or Wicked) slowly wiping out the previous market for more modern and relatable shows?
I think in the West End, yes. In the view of the general public, why go see a new emotional show when you can see a tried and tested one? The fringe on the other hand, is packed with emotional shows, and they work in such an intimate environment. Titanic and The Rise and Fall of Little Voice are running in a fringe spaces at the moment, and loads of stuff like Grey Gardens has been on recently to great acclaim.
well, I think there's a difference between Phantom and Titanic and Les Miz and Grey Gardens... I mean, POTO and Les Miz are mega musicals, not nuanced shows, and I think the flop of Doctor Zhivago might prove that the time of mega musicals it's over. Thank God.
