AEA Councilors are Tony Voters

This is really bugging me. I just found out a couple of weeks ago that all elected Equity councilors become Tony Awards voters for the duration of their tenure. Which means all AEA reps have their attention drawn specifically to large theatres in NYC, instead of being encouraged to support theatre of all sizes in all parts of the country. For an AEA member outside of NYC, such as myself, this is somewhat disconcerting. It also seems as though it encourages people to run for office so that they have perks like free Hamilton tickets and free pie when they see Waitress instead of running because they wish to better the union itself.

Anyone have insight on this?
