As he will host the Tonys this year and his late night television talk show is doing so well in the states I was wondering what opinions you Americans have of him?

 

As someone in the UK it's really nice to see someone doing so well. Looks wise he's not your stereotypical star. But his comedic talent is awesome! He also seems like just a nice guy.

I personally love him and am looking forward to his hosting the Tonys.  And I agree with you--he just seems like he would be a nice and genuine person if you met him in real life.  Who knows, of course, but he gives that impression.

I saw him in "The History Boys" and "One Man, Two Guvnors" and thought he was great, especially "One Man"

Watched the movie of "History Boys" many time and was quite impressed with him.  But "Into The Woods" really shows the range of his talents.  I don't watch the monologue but his late night show can be quite entertaining, I like the way he brings all the guest on at the same time (like Graham Norton does) it creates an interesting dynamic and fun interaction among the guests and Carpool Karaoke is always a blast.

I've actually been a fan of his for a while, and while I always loved him, his late night show has only made me love him more, like to extreme levels. He's killing it with the late late show, doing about 100 times better than I even expected, and I expected him to do really well. I was super excited when I heard he was going to host the Tony's, he's been such a champion for Broadway, even with his show being on the west coast, so it's exciting to have someone so energized about theater hosting, and someone so endearing, funny and charming too!

I love James Corden! I was excited when he was announced as the host for the Tonys. He is killing it on the Late Late Show. Perfect comedic timing and delivery and he's done some pretty unique things on the show.

He has talent in spades and I just love when he sings. He isn't afraid to poke fun at himself or show his sensitive side. Once, he had Stevie Wonder call James' wife (who is a massive Stevie fan) and when Stevie sang, "I just called to say ... James loves you", James started to tear up.

He just seems like a really likeable guy. I hope one day I get to see him star in a Broadway musical.

Whenever someone asks me what I think was the funniest or best play/musical I've ever seen, I have no problem answering the "funniest" query:  hands down, ONE MAN TWO GUVNORS.  It was just as funny the second time, even though I knew what was coming up. James Corden definitely deserved his Tony!

I am genuinely pleased that Mr Corden has managed such an effective turnaround in his career after the total nadir that was 2009 or so, and he was totally oversaturated in the British public consciousness for (publicly and on camera) being a bit of a knob.

Whether it's a mellowing out with age or effective PR management, he and his representatives have done a very, very good job.

I did not remember his name, but when I looked up Brantley's review of HISTORY BOYS and its accompanying photo, then I remembered him from the play. That was such an engaging play and the actors ( including James Corden) acquitted themselves very well!

And to answer the original question, he's pretty well liked here. We didn't get that moment of him in 2009 that DeNada mentioned. The country just had a collective "Who?" moment when CBS announced him as the host of The Late Late Show. He's done such a good job there though that most people I've talked to about it absolutely love what they've seen of it and him.

I find Myself being genuinely happy for his success here. I love his carpool karaoke.  Plus, he's adorable.

When he was initially announced to replace Crain ferguson I was kind angered and was like there no way someone can replace the perfect person that is Craig, but ever since James' first carpool karaoke I've been hooked and it's so nice that he's a Broadway fanboy. During his phantom but I could not stop laughing.

What was the 2009 UK thing?

I've liked him in everything I've seen him act in--especially ITW and History Boys (on stage and the movie).

I'm gonna sound a bit of a frump in this love thread, but I'm more mixed on him on his talk show.  As one of his guests recently (blanking on who) teased him, "You love everything!"  (this was after he had just said in five minutes how much he loved something about 10 times).  His personality can be a bit wearing on me (while I think I would have more fun hanging out with him in person than Graham Norton, Norton's more sardonic energy, while it prob wouldn't play in the US, works better for me).  And *ducks and hides* I am genuinely tired of carpool karaoke.  But I do seem to be in the minority--to the original poster he's been doing very well--CBS gave him a prime time special celebrating the first year of his late night show, Entertainment Weekly raved endless about him in a lengthy cover story, etc...

Forgive me if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but the National Theatre Live is doing an encore screening of the UK stage production of "One Man, Two Guvnors" starring James Corden.  It will be in cinemas nationwide on June 21, and tickets go on sale today (May 20).  This has never aired on TV and has not been released on video, so it's a great opportunity to see this show.

Oh I'm so excited to hear that about One Man Two Guvnors! I'd been hoping to find it on DVD for a while, but it didn't appear as though one existed. So happy I'll have a chance to actually see this! The Indie-ish movie theater here that actually got The Last Five Years (which shocked me!) will be showing it! Bless theaters like this.
