Heh. I was going to suggest she'll join Disaster, which is getting a 1 year extension.

Maybe she's in The Front Page? I don't know they play, but it's directed by Jack O'Brien, and she worked with him in Hairspray.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

So excited for this! Hairspray was the first show I loved as a young girl. :)

I don't understand something. Disaster is a fully fledged musical right? So how can non cast members perform songs from a different musical during that show, and only one night, April 13th ?

Seth has been having former co-stars of people in the show or friends coming to sing after the show. Part of their Broadway Cares fundraising.

Jack O'Brien, Marc Shaiman, and Scott Wittman are all involved with CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.

Considering their history with Winokur and HAIRSPRAY, I wonder if she could be playing one of the mothers in that show.

That kind of role seems small potatoes for a Tony winning lead actress.

Because she followed up that role with {fill in subsequent performances}?  Not a put down, but what business is she in, if not one in which actors re-invent themselves, based on their demand?

Alice Ripley is playing a non existent role right now for a pay check....and I'd say she is more easily cast-able than Marissa J W...

Why should an actress of Alice Ripley's talents be dismissed in that way? I don't know the show, or how the role is written, but based on the premise alone (playing the mother of a perceived monster), seems really, really interesting to me.

Having less stage time (and again, I don't know how the role is written) makes the role even more exciting because of the challenges involved regarding what choices to make that would create the most interesting characterization within a constricted time frame.

If you have the time, or the inclination, have a listen to this NPR podcast of an interview with Sue Klebold (the mother of Columbine shooter, Dylan Klebold). I was surprised, and a little taken aback (meaning I had to take some time think about) her response to the very first question she was asked. That was only the first 2:18  of the interview. Lengthy face time isn't always needed to pique an audience's interest.

I don't think the premise of Ripley's role should be considered "non existent", but I'm curious to know from those who've seen the show if the role is truly written so poorly that it's not worthy of an actress of Alice Ripley's talents?

I haven't seen the show yet but my friend saw it last week and told me he couldn't understand why Ripley would take an ensemble role where she just blends in completely.

I saw American Psycho on Tuesday and I couldn't really understand why she had taken the role either. It's essentially a featured ensemble role, she plays multiple brief cameo roles and sings in the ensemble numbers. She sings one song with Jennifer Damiano, but it isn't very long and her solo part is maybe a minute of the beginning.

Both of these ladies have somewhat of a screen career too that likely pays more than a job on Broadway. My argument was that once you reach a certain level in your career you usually don't want to go backwards.  If they are desperate for a paycheck they likely have other, easier,  options. According to INMDb Ripley currently has a movie in post production for example.

Ripley has stated that she considers it a "cameo"... Maybe she just really believed in the show and wanted to be a part of it although it does seem strange.

Has anyone ever considered maybe everyone doesn't want to carry an entire show every time? Especially after Ripley did that for so many years with NEXT TO NORMAL which everyone knows was very taxing.

Oh, yeah... Mos Def (Ha! a little "Hamilton" reference... See what I did there?) My disappointment comes more in regards to (what seems to be) the writing. The character of Patrick Bateman's mother seems to have been underwritten, if what I read within this thread accurately portrays the role as being merely an indiscriminate ensemble role that "just blends in completely" and is considered by the actress playing the role as "a cameo".

But, ya' know what? I'm prejudiced. Whatever Alice Ripley (or any talented actor) does to pay the rent, keep their creative minds occupied, stay 'in-touch' by keeping their name visual in the media, etc, etc, yadda, yadda, yadda...

MEH...

Sure, I would have loved that my imagined aspirations for the role Ripley is playing in American Psycho would have been so spot-on that everyone in this thread would "Let It Go", but you're absolutely right, IMO. Yup!: "maybe everyone doesn't want to carry an entire show every time"

... and what's so wrong about that!?

I don't know why everyone is constantly complaining about Alice's role being small. She loves the show, and she loves the role. Like, calm down and let her do the work she loves. As long as she's happy, I'm fine. And she is.
