I think it's about time to talk about my personal favorite NY Theatre award. I've always found the Drama Desks to be far less predictable than the Tonys, mostly due to the fact that it includes all NY theatre rather than just Broadway. This year will be especially interesting due to the fact that Hamilton will not be eligible, so all the other shows will be battling it out. So my questions are:

1. Which musical will take home the big prize, as well as the other major musical awards that would otherwise go to Hamilton this year?
(I have no idea who will win best musical, but I think Direction might go to John Doyle or one of the other revival directors)

2. Which off-Broadway shows do you think are contenders for nominations?

3. Which Off-Broadway shows would you personally like to see get recognized?

4. Which shows are contenders for Unique Theatrical Experience?

5. Who will the music/lyrics awards go to? Do you think they will go to different shows?

6. Which Tony contenders might get left out of the Drama Desks due to the competition against Non-Broadway shows?

Personally, I'd love to see the following shows get recognized (I'm not necessarily saying they will):

--Futurity (Music, Set Design, Direction)
--Smokefall (Play, Direction, Featured Actress - Taylor Richardson)
--Dot (Play)
--Invisible Thread (Music, Direction)
--Incident at Vichy (Revival of a Play)
--The Robber Bridegroom (Revival of a Musical, Direction)
--First Daughter Suite (Featured Actress - Rachel Bay Jones, Mary Testa, Alison Fraser, Caissey Levy)
--Henry IV (Revival of a Play, Direction, Featured Actress - Jade Anouka and/or Sophie Stanton)
--Nice Fish (Leading Actor - Mark Rylance)
--Broadway and the Bard (Outstanding Revue)

These are shows that I didn't/haven't seen, but could get some nominations based on what I've heard:

--Dear Evan Hansen
--A Streetcar Named Desire (St. Ann's)
--King and Country: Shakespeare’s Great Cycle of Kings (BAM)
--Lazarus

With Hamilton out of the way, I think:

*Michael Arden or John Doyle could win Direction of a Musical.
*Danny Burstein could win Lead Actor in a Musical.
*Savion Glover, Spencer Liff, or Hofesh Shechter could win Best Choreography.
*Waitress could probably win at least one of the score categories.

I'm really hoping for Incident at Vichy to get a lot of love

It would be great to see Hir recognized in a few categories. I know that play wasn't to everyone's taste, but I thought it was incredibly smart and daring as far as most Off-Broadway productions go. Kristine Nielsen was also wonderful, and I loved the set design.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

I'd love to see DWSA get recognized here, as well as the Waitress score. Is Daddy Long Legs eligible this year? If so, I'd love to see it get recognized as well.

^If Daddy Long Legs opened off-Broadway this season, then I think it will be eligible.

I saw Daddy Long Legs today and was completely enchanted by the experience.  What beautiful story telling and performances.  The songs were wonderful as well.  This is the second consecutive "quiet" musical (Bright Star the other) that I've seen and I have become a huge fan of this type of musical.  While I love the glam and glitz of a traditional Broadway musical, there's something quite special about this type of show for me.  Seeing it with a TDF ticket was a great benefit, but I would have gladly paid full price for this type of quality.

Megan McGinnis was so fabulous that I can't even imagine the rehearsal process to attain such a convincing and mesmerizing performance, again in a quiet natural way.  No belting or dancing needed, just a good story, great songs and wonderful performances.  Well done!!
