Never had a burning desire to go there. Going on your own is asking for trouble.

They should put a halt on traveling to North Korea for Americans.

I don't agree that the US government should tell citizens where they can and can't go. It's bad enough that Cuba was off-limits for so long (and still sort of is). This is not how a free society should work. People should make their own decisions about where to travel.

Unless they have a personal connection to it, why would any American want to go to there?

Why should anyone feel bad for this guy? He was well aware of the political climate in North Korea and chose to travel there at his own peril.  I don't understand why any sane tourist would want to visit that country.

If someone goes there and gets arrested know you are on your own and do not look for the government to get your ass out of there.

Every tourist should know the laws and customs of whatever country they're going to, not necessarily just NK. Just because something is A-OK in 'Murica, doesn't mean it applies to the rest of the world.

This is so true! Just ask the Americans who were caught with illegal drugs in their possession in Singapore! The Death Penalty...No if, ands or buts! Even the American Government going to bat for them didn't help.

^ what I'm having a problem with the sentencing of American in the North Korea is that the over whelming majority of them are convicted of spying or being apart of the CIA. these are false convictions. I understand it's North Korea, but if American citizens are being convicted for being apart of the CIA then the government of the us has the responsibility to get them out. Also if you find tapes of what they were accusing the first guy, Otto, you will see it was basically faked. He's being fed a confession and you can tell he's been manipulated.

I could be wrong, but I believe that Cuba is, and has long been, the only country Americans are not allowed to travel to. It's a lot easier now, with exceptions for travel for educational and other purposes (and I think that's basically on an honor system), but tourism is still officially prohibited. How can a country that claims to respect individual freedom tell its citizens where they may and may not go? (And, ironically, these restrictions on the freedom of Americans are supposed to be for the sake of promoting freedom in Cuba. That's worked out well.)
