I think the original film has a sooty look to it, other than the chalk painting scene. And the latter scenes before "Let's Go Fly a Kite" are somber (in the palette and lighting), not just the chimney sweep scene, but the bank late at night, the dark alleys of London, the empty park, etc.

I'm sure that was intentional.

MARY POPPINS in its original run was the first movie I ever fell in love with (little 8-year-old protogay that I was). Years later I worked with Tony Walton the brilliant set and costume designer who designed the look for the film. (In fact at Disney Hall in LA right now, there happens to be a lovely little exhibit of some of Tony's sketches for the film, along with some of Oliver Smith's work.) The original palette for the sets was primarily a host of grays-- lavender grays, slate grays, blue grays, etc. I agree with Bestie that there were many dark-keyed scenes scattered through the film, especially in the second half. But I also fault the movie for being so horribly OVERLIT in most of the early scenes and Banks home interiors. By today's standards, those scenes can seem like an 80's sitcom in their relentless brightness.

Still, I really hope the new designs for the movie can really respect the bones Tony created for the original.

If Daisy Ridley from Star Wars could play a convincing 28 year old I'd like to see her as Jane she has quite the voice. :)

Hmmmmm, well it was better than what I expected though I'm still not sure I'd go as far to say she has a great voice! I'll be interested to see what else she does in the next few years...

Here is Grace Randolph once again idiotically accusing Emily Blunt of being 'box office poison', and falsely accusing Into the Woods of underperforming...

How, exactly? By spreading her platform and getting more people to watch her? That's not exposing her for an idiot, that's just giving her exposure.

Have you tried simply not watching her videos?

Trust me, I haven't. But as I was on YouTube yesterday, I noticed the video in suggestions. I originally wasn't going to watch it, but I was curious enough to hear her thoughts. Plus, I wanted to hear what you think of her spectacularly wrong facts.

I have a feeling that Lin's Oscar is far more likely to come from his score for Moana than his performance in a Mary Poppins sequel.

She's a magical nanny. Of course she doesn't age.

Bert, while officially a chimney sweep , did a lot of "odd jobs" in the books and the  movie. ( the whole chalk artist sequence)  so Lin's character may officially be a "lamplighter" ( while coal gas was used till the 70's it was more used in households for heat and cooking than external illumination) I'm sure he'll play other roles , which, like his singing will be tailored for his skills. ( and there is always Autotune ya know)

Surely your head has already been successfully wrapped around a universe where a nanny can fly.
