Finally. It's about time this poor struggling upstart of a show began to get people's attention.

UPDATE:

In lieu of subsequent comments, let me note I am not snarking about Hamilton deserving to be on the broadcast or the positive aspects of having a Broadway show get attention.  I was simply joking about yet another win in the national exposure department for this excellent show.

I feel like this is just CBS' way to advertise the Tonys. Also why is Hamilton doing this? ^ as indytallguy says they aren't struggling at the box office.

I told a handful of my "non-theatre" friends about the news this morning, and I was taken aback by how stunned/impressed they were. A Grammy performance is very seriously going to take hold of a lot of the mainstream/commercial/"non-theatre" market.

Plus, their impending win for Best Musical Theatre Album will only be streamed online, so they gotta do something about it.

Confused by some of the snark on here. It's nominated for (and will have already won) a Grammy, and the exposure is massive.

Broadway fans...first to complain when the mainstream public doesn't care about Broadway, and first to complain when a show becomes "overexposed".

I'm excited! This will be the first time they will have done any sort of live performance on television.

"Overexposed?" More like shoved in our faces and down our throats at every opportunity --- or more accurately, inopportunity.

Exactly.  Love it or hate it, I can't think of another show in the past decade (Including Book of Mormon) that's been so much a part of the cultural zeitgeist.   Anecdotal perhaps, but I have many colleagues who never attend theater but are desperate to see this.  This show deserves to be on the Grammy Awards and is the rare Broadway show that won't have people fast-forwarding to the next performer.

Shoving down people's throats? No one has to watch the Grammys, the Tonys, or every performance Hamilton wants to do. Hell, no one needs to see Hamilton at all.

But people want to be in the room where it happens. Clearly CBS wants to bring the room to anyone who wishes to.

Good for you, Hamilton.

Would that it were so!

Even if Hamilton is shoved down our throats (which I don't think it is...turn off your tv, shut down the computer, and don't look at stuff), you cannot deny what something like this will do.

Young men of color are going to see other men of color getting praised for creating music, for performing extremely well on stage, and for being really, really smart.

God damn, isn't that enough to deal with a constant hum?

Next question: How do we get to be in the audience that night at the Richard Rodgers when the number is performed??

We are not living in 1984Hamilton is not Big Brother. You are a human being. You inherently have free will and autonomy. Jeez, I can't stand when people whine about the phenomenon that this show has become. Either enjoy, embrace, and live in it—or ignore it and shut up.

your suggestion that people have to ignore it and/or shut up actually feeds into the themes of 1984. as long as the speech is not a threat to public safety, anyone can voice their dismay or disappointment or frustration or any opinion really. no one person or entity can stop that. it is freedom of speech. i don't personally get the hate or backlash but your suggestion to suppress another's viewpoint is questionable.

They are wanted because of the attention it already has.  Why would the Grammy's want some show no one has heard to perform?  They want what's hot.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Yeah, I have free will not to read the actual articles/regurgitated press releases on Playbill, BWW, and Broadway.com, but I can't avoid the headlines.

Why is HAMILTON doing this? Why not? I think it's great. Also, believe it or not, HAMILTON is not a known commodity for most of the country. At some point, after everyone in Manhattan sees HAMILTON, they'll rely on a healthy tourist trade to keep it all going... What better way to do this then to open the Grammy Awards? Last year, the Grammy Awards had an audience of 25.2 million...a six year low, by the way. The Tony Awards last year attracted an audience of 6.35 million. This is a good move for HAMILTON.

^For the record, they're not opening the Grammys, they are only doing the opening number.

This is so exciting! I wish they were doing "Room Where It Happens," but I guess the title number makes much more sense.

They have to set themselves up to spike the ball over the net at The Tonys.  Or as we love to call them here, The Tony'ses's.  And what might the song to spike be?  "My Shot" is my guess.

They are doing "Alexander Hamilton" at the Grammys, but I honestly think they may pull out a medley for the Tony Awards, if only because they have so many people they need to highlight. Remember last year when Something Rotten performed a number WITHOUT Christian Borle and he won? It seemed strange.

I have no doubt that Lin will want to highlight Leslie as he is the best shot they have at an acting win.

I really hope they don't do a medley- not that the show really needs a stellar performance to sell tickets, but medleys are rarely as effective as one full number from the show. My Shot seems to be the most logical choice for the Tonys.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
